Ever since I went to solid black wallpaper my battery life has dramatically improved.

Yep, that's because it doesn't take any pixel illumination to create black. I also use dark themes to try and use the least amount of battery possible.

I turned off the flash on the camera and took a close up picture of a dark blue. Just gotta get close enough that it blacks out. Turned out pitch black which to me also looks more elegant.

View photo > menu > set as > homescreen wallpaper and lock screen also = easy

What folder do you put wallpapers in order for the phone to find them?

If you make your own by taking a picture, it goes into your gallery and you access it that way. If you get a wallpaper app from the market, you just select the wallpaper through the downloaded app or, save the ones you like to your gallery and access it that way.
