Blackberry/Apple style notifications

Got my Nexus 4 yesterday and haven't put it down yet lol I just wanted to know if there's a way to get a notification on the actual app icon like the red circle on Blackberry and iOS has like a number in the red circle. Does Android not have that? My first Android phone by the way coming from Blackberry.
