I'm a current Blackberry user who will go Android when contract is up in a few months. When the last few Blackberry OS's where released (except for OS 6) all I had to do was take any carrier release, remove the vendor file, and install it on my phone. Very simple. This is possible no matter where in the world the carrier is located. Is that possible on Android or is that what rooting is for? Thanks!

p.s. These were not custom ROMS (although some hybrids are available).

First doing a BB update is nothing like tweaking a Droid. Rooting or doing a custom rom.
Every single question you just posed is answered in the FAQ at the top of this forum. Read that. Its far more involved, way more rewarding, and fun too!

Just left the world of blackberry a few days ago. My head hurts from wading so much. I'll be doing a Tom flash tonight most likely.

Cheers.

I had an old BB 8320 until 2 days ago when I got my Incredible. All I have to say is wow. It's like night and day between the phones and now I'm mad for not making the switch sooner. Learning that android is Linux based after the fact made me smile very wide, and made my wife shake her head...I love linux. My computer runs it, hers dont. This is going to be a lot of fun. Lots and lots of fun.

I used to own a Bold 9000 and yes the upgrades were much less stress. That being said, flashing a new ROM/OS on Android isn't much more complicated. It may be easier for you to walk away with a "brick", albeit dependent on your device, but in my opinion not very difficult at all.

My advice to you is read. Read up as much as possible on the topic---I find XDA to be quite useful in this regard.

Be brave my friend and happy flashing/rooting.... :)
