Blackberry Storm chargers work with Incredible

I've found that the Incredible will charge on any micro usb charger. The Droid I had for a week before returning it was very picky and only recharged on it's own (and my Motorola bluetooth headset) recharger.

That's with any moto handset....Had that problem with my q9m....I think Moto programs their devices with something.

**blackberry charger killed my Incredible**

Ordered my Dinc and got it last Tues. Asked Verizon store if I could use my blackberry chargers. The said yes without hesitation so i was glad to save a few bucks.
I used a blackberry wall charger the second day and after that nothing but problems. by sat., it was holding a charger for 3 hrs max. On sun. it died. Wouldnt' charge or turn on. Took it back to V store. Manager got it to come on and then it died for good.
Now i have to wait all ove again. I know others who have had issues after using their BB charger on their phone.

That's my experience and the tech at Verizon said it was my charger. Something about a difference in the prongs in the connector. I only know to use HTC chargers on my next Dinc.

hope it helps someone.

why are you spreading you FUD over here now. You phone or the charger was a dud. the BB chargers work perfectly fine

I agree completely. I have been using my BB chargers since I bought my Incredible and have had no problems whatsoever.

Usb, Mini-USB, and Micro-Usb are form factor and specifications standards. They all push the same numbers with a different connector. .5 Amps with the usb to computer only and 1 Amp straight from the wall.

Watts = Voltage (in volts) x Amps

USB spec allows 4.75 to 5.25 volts.

So now, it won't mess up your battery.

I've been using my BlackBerry chargers too (one at the office, one in the car) and while at home I have the Dinc by my bed I grabbed my Storm charger to use in the garage, the one with the removable plug for world-wide use...well after about 30mins I picked up the phone to skip a track and it had a message saying I was using the wrong adapter.

SO....not all chargers are made equally...I guess.

That said it hasn't ever given me that message off the BlackBerry charger at work (its the one with the flip down prongs)

I have had the Di since release and I have not even taken the charger out of the box. My bb charger is run behind my bed and onto my night stand and I have been using it without any problems.

The standard Blackberry Storm charger shows its output 5V at 700mA, but the Droid charger shows 5V at 1000mA.

I am not an electrical person, but something tells me that they are different, even though the ends are the same. I charged my battery up with the storm charger initially, and have used the Incredible one ever since.

This might be a placebo effect, but I have noticed that the charge seems to be 'different' when using the two chargers. I noticed the charge doesn't seem to last as long after using the Storm charger, but ever since I used the Incredible one, it has been longer in usage. Then again, it could be beause the battery is getting broken in...

Just means that it will take slightly longer to charge your Droid with the Storm charger. The higher the amperage, the faster the charge. In the long run, even though it will take slightly longer to charge your phone, your battery will last longer.

After using my Blackberry wall charger on my Incredible, my phone died in about 4 days. Battery started going down to about 3hrs. Died on Sunday.

Waiting on replacement from Verizon.

I'll be personally attacked for sharing this info, but could care less. I took my BB charger and phone to an electrician who repairs phones also (used to work for Verizon) and confirmed that there are irregularities in the chargers in the way they deliver wattage. it also has something to do with the prong configuration in the connector. SO NOT ALL MICROS ARE CREATED EQUAL.

And, before you reply search around and read the comments of those reporting funky things with their Incredible after using their BB chargers.

Take it for what it worth. Only trying to help.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it only takes once. That's all it took with mine. The BB charger causes internal damage. That damage then begins to drain your battery, various feature malfunctions, unresponsive screen, and a whole bunch of stuff. The damage inflicted is unpredictable as reported by others.

The pin outs cannot be different on the MicroUSB chargers. It has to follow standards for supplying power over the correct pins otherwise you'll be applying power to data pins on the device and you would blow out the USB communications chip in the phone and the phone would never EVER get a charge.

It IS possible in the way it regulates the power but the pinouts for charging will always be the same from device to device. If Blackberry decided to make say pins 1 and 2 + and - where every other device uses pin 7 and 8, well you wouldn't even be able to charge your blackberry with any other type of USB chargers.

The point he made in how the current is delivered is valid but I call FUD on the reason being the prong setup causing it. The USB is a standard, you make any changes to the USB pinouts on your device and you're not allowed to call it a USB anymore or apply the USB stamp and logo on your device packaging.

Don't use your Storm charger on your Incredible. I burned up my first Incredible this way. Look at the ratings on both and you'll see why. The BB one is 1A i think and the Incredible one is .7A I think. I don't have them right in front of me.

Sorry to hear that retro. I hate that it happened, but FINALLY someone to back me up on this.

did your battery start wearing down after using the BB charger and then die after a few days?

I don't know why I have been criticized so much for reporting this. I think Verizon is in for a big shock when all these Incs come back fried. And, a lot of people have switched from BB to Droid, so its going to be interesting.

It wouldn't charge it all. Almost like it would discharge it over night. I let the Verizon CSR at the store and on the phone know. It took 2 weeks to get me a new one and I put my Storm charger in a box so I wouldn't accidentally use it.

I've even posted it on this forum at least 3 or 4 times. Just trying to get the word out. Maybe it's only certain revisions of the phone hardware....

The Blackberry is 700mA (or .7A), I have it right in front of me.

Anyway, direct from Wikipedia:

The cellular phone carrier group, Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP), have recently endorsed Micro-USB as the standard connector for data and power on mobile devices.[23] These include various types of battery chargers, allowing Micro-USB to be the single external cable link needed by some devices. As of January 30, 2009 Micro-USB has been accepted by almost all cell phone manufacturers as the standard charging port (including Apple, HTC, Motorola, Nokia, LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Research In Motion) in the EU and most of the world. Worldwide conversion to the new cellphone charging standard is expected to be completed between 2010 to 2012.

In addition, on 22 October 2009 the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) announced that it had embraced micro-USB as the Universal Charger Solution its "energy-efficient one-charger-fits-all new mobile phone solution", and added: "Based on the Micro-USB interface, UCS chargers will also include a 4-star or higher efficiency rating?up to three times more energy-efficient than an unrated charger."

Here is the link, scroll down to Mini - Micro USB: Universal Serial Bus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So as you can see, the chargers are suppose to be standard all across the board if they are using Micro USB and RIM is listed above as one of the manufactures.

I'm sure you've been berated by the "experts", but we both know what happened and just tried to help others, but instead attacked. I didn't come here to get into a technical discussion.

I'm still waiting on my phone. They are saying the 30th on ship date. Keeps getting moved back. :(

Anyway, i used my BB wall charger on day two after being told by V store i could and seeing it on the the Verizon site as being compatible. My battery started wearing down fast. On day 4 was down to 3 hrs. Died on Sun.

Really sucks but not looking like there's much I can do. Verizon's not being helpful at all.

Glad you got your new phone and kudos for trying to help others!

Not for nothing, there have been reports of other devices dying at the hands of their OWN charger and Batteries have also shown to be defective while being charged with their own charger as well. Could very well be that you had a defective phone/battery? I have charged my phone with my Blackberry branded charger and others have too with no problems.

The fact that the BB charger puts out only 700mA and as someone stated their HTC charger was stamped with 1000mA tells me that the BB charger is safe to use. Lower the Amp number, the longer the battery will take to charge and in turn increase the life of the battery. Higher the number, the faster the battery will charge and thus decreasing the life of the battery.

If you don't believe Wikipidia, then follow the link in that article to the website of the organization that setup the standard and you'll get the same exact story from the horses mouth.

I'm not saying your a liar or that it's not true, just stating that there is some other reason your phone fried like a defective charger, battery or phone not because ALL microUSB chargers besides the HTC one will fry your phone. You can't get all those pretty stamps that are tattooed all over the BB and HTC charger if you don't follow standards.

You are missing and leaving out another variable....the phone. I don't care what the specs say on the micro usb, how do you know that there's not something in the phone that's different? These new droids are ultra sophisticated and make the BBs look like toy phones.

I know there's something different either with the charger, phone, or both and now know better than to use my BB charger on my next droid and feel sorry for those who will suffer the same fate as I did.

I've seen fried droids and people, including a personal friend, reporting funky things with their Inc only after using the BB charger.

Do you really want to chance it to save $30 bucks or so? Not me. (at least not now) :p

I would think that the BB chargers are of a higher quality than the cheapo ones from e-bay. I am sure some phones have died but I seriously doubt that it was the charger, and if it was the charger was defective. 5 volts is 5 volts. the BB charger is less amps but so is the port on a computer.
