Blackberry to Epic 4G and a Mac user - Did I make a mistake

Yes it can. Repeat the steps starting after getting root access, making sure not to substitute anything and it should work.

No dice.

I reflashed to v1.02 (rather than v1.04) of Drockstar's clean kernel exactly as the instruction indicated, but no change in anything. ROM Manger still does nothing when I click to flash ClockworkMod recovery.

I even flashed back on my backup of the stock kernel, then went to v1.02 of Drockstar's clean kernel, and then tried ROM Manger again, all to the same result.

Oscar Mike Golf!

I'm not sure what you're doing wrong then. I refer you back to this thread, and suggest you find a computer to use for a few minutes. Not only will it work better, but you'll get a usable version of Clockwork. Oh, and using Odin to go back to stock first would be best.

I would recommend you try the method below. I used it under the the Windows version yesterday to root my phone when I switched over to the new Bonsai ROM and it works flawlessly. No input from me other than excepting the TOS agreement and plugging my phone into USB with debugging activated. About 2 or 3 minutes later I'm rooted and CWM installed. They have it available in Windows, Linux and MAC versions.

Bonsai MasterKey ROOT and CWM/Recovery Tool

Let me stop you here. And I do mean STOP you here. You're done. Please stop trying to install a recovery, you have the latest one installed and working fine.

Now wait a second.

Say that clicking "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" in ROM Manager is successfully installing the latest version of ClockworkMod as my recovery partition, what was the whole point of being told I would have to correctly select my device as Epic 4g in the original instructions that I was following:

* open ROM Manager app, and Tap "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". Choose the Epic 4G.
The following message will appear:
"Epic4G does not have an officially supported ClockworkMod Recovery yet. Have you installed a ClockworkMod recovery manually?"
choose yes, and select ClockworkMod 2.x.

This was from: [GUIDE]Full Root and CWM without computer w/ Gingerbreak.apk by Chainfire & 743C - xda-developers

So what was the point of that? Again, nothing popped up to permit me to select Epic 4G. Nothing apparent happens at all when I click "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery".

I'm inclined to think that whatever ClockworkMod ROM Manager did install, might not be compatible with the epic 4G.

Are there different "flavors" (?) of clockworkMod for different phones? Why else is ROM Manger supposed to ask what device I'm on.

Yes there are different versions of CWM for different devices. This all really seems to be getting very confusing. If at all possible I would really recommend trying the Bonsai MasterKey ROOT and CWM/Recovery Tool.

It worked very well for me and I really believe if you grab the Mac version it will root your phone for you and your headaches will be over. One program, root & CWM all in one shot done.

Thanks again, Paul.

Yup, I reflashed back on a backup of my stock kernel that I made with SGS Kernel Flasher back at the start of it. I then unrooted using gingerbreak and followed the insanely simple and quite pleasant Bonsai unlocking tool for OS X.

Right now I'm using its copy of nandroid to create a backup of the whole shebang before I go any further.

Are there any differences between this Bonsai recovery tool and ClockworkMod? How does support for EXT4 file systems play in?

Can I install syndicate rom by just putting the .zip in my sd-card root directory and just take it from there, treating Bonsai recovery tool like clockworkMod 3.x?

Yes you should be able to place a copy of Syndicate on your sdcard and wipe and flash.
