is there a way to block numbers not in your contact with the Samsung stock phone app? currently, i am using a third party app that blocks numbers that are not in my contact and simply hangs up the call without going to voice mail, but I would use the Samsung phone app if can block unknown and numbers not in my contact.

You can! In the Phone app settings you can toggle the 'Block calls from unknown numbers' option.
right. i wish they would add the option to 'hang up the calls' instead of going to voice mail. if you really want to block (spam or otherwise) a call, then i certainly do not want them to leave a voicemail.

Most of the voicemail systems are done on the carrier side, however, so that option would have to be implemented there. All the phone can do is decline a blocked call; what happens on the carrier's side after that is, well, on the carrier.

is blocking unknown numbers the same as blocking private numbers (with *67)?
No but they are related. *67 blocks caller ID's from showing your number before you initiate a call, while the unknown number block just doesn't let numbers that aren't saved to your contacts go through. However, even if one of your contacts calls you, if they use *67, the caller ID will block the number, causing the call on your phone to be marked as 'unknown'.

right. That is the sole why i am using the third-party app right now to simply hang up.

I used one of those apps several years ago and while it worked, it seemed the volume of spam calls increased. Almost made me suspect it was the company with the app doing it to make you think you can't do without it.
