I have just experienced about 2 frustrating hours with Verizon support, Verizon Tech at a Retail outlet, and Samsung Level 1 and Level 2 support.
I connect to my phone with a Plantronics Discovery 925 Bluetooth headset. Works fine. After around 5 seconds, my display dims to about 10% and then another 5 seconds later, the screen locks. My default is set to 2 minutes.
OK, imagine you connect to a an IVR or call director system without voice prompts. You listen to the instructions and then need to hit a number on your keypad. If it takes about 10 seconds to listen to the menu before your next entry, you have to unlock the phone and then hit the number. A seven level menu system will require 14 executions on your phone -- unlock, hit number, unlock hit number....
Verizon had no answer and Samsung second level support reported that that is the way it works and there is nothing that can be done. Yet, my friend who has the GalaxyS on Tmobile says it does the same thing with his Bluetooth (lives in NY and needs to drive with a headset by law) but he says he just touches the screen and it comes back to life. Still a double tap but a great deal easier than having to find the little button on the right and making sure that the button is fully depressed.
To make matters worse, Samsung said that the Tmobile phone is not the same as the Verizon phone because one is CDMA and the other is GSM. That's where I lost it and asked to speak to a Duty Manager but she indicated that she is as high as I am going to go.
My next step is to walk into my local Verizon retailer and ask to speak with the Regional Samsung rep. This is stupid or maybe I am stupid... not sure which just yet....
UPDATE: The aforementioned friend with the GalaxyS on Tmobile just called and we tested again. A slight change to his dynamic but the same nonetheless... His Screen Lock like mine is set to two minutes. Upon a phone call via bluetooth, his phone does go dark and to lock but a push of the lock/power button brings the display back to life and at full brightness for no less than his Screen Lock setting (he had to go so we couldn't test longer) -- not in 10, 20, or even 60 seconds.
