Bluetooth car adapter issue

I installed an aftermarket Bluetooth adapter into my car. It interfaces with my existing head unit so that I can use its buttons to pause/play/skip tracks. Everything works fine, except that I can't skip a track when my phone's screen is turned off. Only when it's on. I tried this with my Nexus 4 and didn't have this problem. Any ideas?

Apparently the issue has to do with me not using a lock screen. I did a factory reset and this functionality worked until the moment I chose Screen Lock - none. That's a bit of a bummer because I hate lock screens.
