Bluetooth earbuds way too loud at lowest setting

I just got some new mid-range Bluetooth earbuds and the volume level is way too loud at the lowest setting. I basically have 3 maybe 4 clicks above zero before it is absolutely unbearable. The slider display barely moves up. The control on the earbuds is tied directly to the phone's volume control.

I don't have this problem with my other headphones or earbuds. They do lean loud but not at all this extreme.

I searched and found a thread related to Samsung phones and turning off media sync but I don't think the Pixel has that setting. My searching also uncovered many others in a similar predicament on non-Android forums from 2018 and earlier.

So, I thought I would just toss it out here and see if anyone has a way to fix this. Otherwise, I guess I have to return them which is unfortunate because they sound good.

Thanks!

Is EQ turned on? If so, try turning if off.

I'm not using one. I don't use the EQ settings in music apps.

This morning, I actually tried connecting other BT headphones back-to-back with these. It's something strange with these. Volume jumps, the same song. Tried resetting them and oddly, it improved a little bit. I got one extra acceptable click of volume but still ridiculously loud at around 40%. I am going to return or exchange them. I emailed the company.
