Bluetooth gamepad/controller for use with Classic Boy

Has anyone had any luck with using a bluetooth game controller for use with the Classic Boy emulator app on a Huawei P20? I'm getting conflicting information online, mostly to do with the suggestion that Huawei phones don't play well with bluetooth controllers. Any advice?
