Bluetooth headphones disconnect when trying to skip song

[Android Central Question]

I have a toshiba rze-bt180h headset and a Huawei y9 2019.
my last pair of headphones were working fine and whenever I long pressed on the volume down/up it skips/rewind for me. but now when I press the volume buttons the volume doesn't change and when I try pressing and holding it disconnects.
it's not from my phone because I've tried connecting with other devices.

Welcome to Android Central! Has it always been this way for these headphones, or did that function recently stop working for the Toshiba pair?
