Google assistant is using the headset mic instead of the Bluetooth headset mic.
I turned on all these settings in Google Assistant to no avail:
- Bluetooth Audio Recording
- Allow bluetooth requests with device locked
- Allow wired headset requests with device locked

Any advice much appreciated

Welcome to Android Central! I assume you mean that Assistant is using the handset mic instead of the BT headset mic, correct?

I'm not using the Jabra app, I'd rather not use any Jabra apps, I checked and they don't have any settings for this.
The issue is that when I use the Google Assistant by saying "OK Google" and other of its commands, my voice is picked up from the phone mic, instead of the headset mic. However, when doing phone-calls, the headset mic is the one used, as expected.

In doing a search it looks like you do need the Jabra app. See screenshot. You might want to give it a try.

I installed the app and pressed the mute/voice button, and I can hear the voice cue stating that it's activated. But Google Assistant doesn't work, when I say "Hey Google", it only works if I'm near to the headset as it is clearly using the headset mic instead. The same happens with my Anker soundcore life Q20 Bluetooth headphones.
Thanks for your answer.

Hi, Thanks for your help. I tried that but my headphones don't show up in the list of devices and brands, which is strange as these the Jabra and Anker BT headphones are very common.

If they don't have Google assistant support built into the headset then it will use the handset to work. My original Bose QC35 didn't have Google assistant built in and I couldn't use it with the headphones. When I upgraded to the QC35 ii it has a Google assistant button on it and when I press and hold the button I can use Google assistant and it works. That is your issue. You need the software built into the headphones/headset to work.

That seems like a good explanation, but I'm confused by the Android design choice under this.

Does this mean that my headset has to have each and every app somehow built into it, if I want to be able to use the app with the headset? Google keyboard doesn't work with my AfterShokz mic. Nor does WhatsApp, or the camera.

I would guess that the headphones would have to send a specific command via Bluetooth to activate Google Assistant. Most Bluetooth headsets should be able to send universal media playback commands, like Pause/Play, since that should be a standardized command that any media app should recognize. But activating Google Assistant is likely a unique command, and would require the headphones to be compatible with that functionality.

Here's a list of headphones that do support Google Assistant: https://www.androidcentral.com/best-headphones-support-google-assistant

Hmm. So this might be a separate issue from whether the mic works with other apps.

Frank150, what happens if you try to use your Bluetooth mic with another app, like video recording or WhatsApp?
