Bluetooth sleep related issue

This is a weird one to me at least. It's started some time after I got 5X, ie it used to work fine. I used to be able to connect to my Nexus 5X in the car and switch tracks with steering wheel buttons on long drives w/o waking it up. Now unless either screen or lockscreen is on it won't skip tracks. It's almost as if Bluetooth commands are ignored when 5X's in deep sleep.

I also have a Bluetooth remote control for music player, which exhibits the same behavior. So, I assume it's not particular hardware issue but rather my 5X or some setting. I also thought may be that was music player issue so I switched to Rocket Player to no avail.

I hope it's as simple as some setting that I'm not aware of. I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks.

Have you tried adjusting the battery optimizations for bluetooth, as in having Doze ignore that bluetooth is on?

Sorry, missed your message somehow.

I did try adding both apps, podcast and music players to "Not Optimized" list under battery settings, assuming that's what turns off Doze on them. Reading your reply maybe I went the wrong way about it and should've done "Bluetooth Share" / "Bluetooth MIDI" app instead. That would make sense. I'll give it a try this weekend. Thanks!
