Then, if you want an icon on your homescreen that takes you to that bookmarked page... After touching the star and putting your bookmark *somewhere* (maybe Desktop Bookmarks), click on the three vertical dots in the top right of Chrome, touch "Bookmarks", find the icon of the bookmark you want on your home screen, touch and hold the icon until another window opens, then select the option "Add to home screen".
Note that none of this works from the search bar, or any other browser-like application - you HAVE to open the Chrome App. Hey, it's just 7 or 8 easily intuitive steps! NOT.
Also note that the "Bookmarks" tab that is often referred to on these pages as "appearing at the bottom of the browser screen" actually doesn't appear at all unless you click on the three dots (at the top right) again and select "bookmarks". Apparently it's OK to skip several steps in the instructions because we were all born with those details in our DNA, right?
