Oh and the only people that could be at risk of those Malicious attacks are root users and you would have to first give the code permission open bootloader isn't a big security hole

I understand that, but he was making it out to be a problem with bootloaders. I have never heard of anything like what he was talking about. There are a few trojans roaming around Chinese third-party app stores that do not require an unlocked bootloader to infect your phone though.

Moto seems to make devices with better battery life and better voice quality. These are both important to me and although I don't like the reduction in freedom ... I rely on my phone for work and personal use ... Thus the utility functions are most important to me.

But ... I am in the minority.

Oh I totally agree with you the whole bootloader being a security risk is a bull their just hoping people are dumb enough to believe them. shoot most people I've met that rooted wanted to get rid of blur so it's not protecting their software or users

If only Moto would give the choice to use Blur or not. All I want is a choice and to make my device MINE, not Motos.

I'm not saying that motorola won't release gb for the d2 I pretty much know it will get it. I was simply using gb as an example
and bootstrap doesn't work if your phone won't boot into android (hosed system) sbf without the phone bootable pain in the but and it often fails. Because you may not have all the stock Apps
My phone booted in recovery by default. I didn't need to do it manually from the application.

If they even gave me a choice between AOSP and Blur I would probably buy the Bionic. The locked bootloader wouldn't matter to me that much in that case.

They should definitely do a thing like the S-OFF option for the Nexus One. If you turned that off, it would unlock the NAND and enable ROM flashing, but you basically voided your warranty by doing so.

Well and it comes down to now days that voiding the warranty to have the phone I paid for is a necessity for me. But I guess this is all hypothetical and in a perfect world ;)

But I guess we'll just have to see. It would be really nice if they could keep the Droid line clean from their Blur and have their other phones Blured to however they deemed fit.

If you can't boot past the m, you can't load bootstrap yes bootstrap works on bootloops, but it needs android to load to take over. In simple terms of your phone can't get to the boot animation get the sbf ready

HTC does not do anything even close to what Motorola does to discourage ROM development. A locked bootloader is much, much more difficult to get around than a NAND lock. The original time that it took for the dev community to get NAND unlocked for the Evo and Incredible was around two months. New HTC phones get S-OFF hacks within weeks. The bootloader for the Milestone still hasn't been fully unlocked yet and that phone is over a year old. The D2 and DX will probably never have their bootloaders unlocked because of eFuse.

What was with their statement about working on a solution for people interested in unlocked bootloaders? Why would they even make a statement like that?

Everything you've stated is true. However, I was referring specifically to acquiring root access. Which HTC attempts to keep their users from doing. The DX wasn't out a week, and it was already rooted. Bootstrapping the recovery so uses could create backups, and flash ROMs maybe took about 2 weeks.

I'm gonna just concede that the bootloader will never be cracked. My point that I've been trying to make is simply: "who cares?" Johnny Phone Hacker isn't exactly missing out on much. I feel like there are some people who have a legitimate need for full access to the kernel, and full disclosure for source code, etc.. but lets be honest, we're talking about a very small group of people, inside of an already very small group of people, ie: people who even bother to root/hack their phones in the 1st place. A large majority of that second group are only complaining because they are under the assumption that they are missing out on something. Its been proven to me several times over in threads just like these.

Probably 98% of the advantages to hacking Android is enjoyed on both platforms, signed bootloader or not.

^^ while I agree I can do just about everything on my d2 I could do on my d1 root load custom roms its a few things that bug me about the current setup and make me wish I still had the d1

I don't think HTC is immune to that either. Its never happened to me, but I've heard of some people's devices hanging on the white HTC screen. I'm guessing at that point they had to flash the RUU file. Which is sorta the HTC equivalent of Moto's SBF.

Which phone is more likely to have that happen? I have no idea, I haven't had either happen to me yet.

Am I just pulling that out of my ass? lol, not at all. I just read a thread about it a few days ago right here Desperate - please help. Stuck on HTC white screen

I've had it happen to me with a d2 it sucks had to flash the sbf through linux but with a true recovery it doesn't matter make backups and use them if you can't get past the m logo. I've done that more times than I can count on my d1 now as far as htc don't know I don't own any of their devices so I can't say anything on that
edit
but that's the thing he could get into recovery and restore a backup a full wipe and restore may have fixed his device but I'm not sure don't own any htc products
