I know that bootstraper from clockwork will back up my stock rom incase of anything happening, I was just wondering about the ins and outs with what is actually saved in the backup and if I were to restore to the backup will the bloatware that allows from OTA updates come with it? just want to make sure that if I switch out to another ROM that I can go back to EXACTLY like the phone was before I did all this. there are no straight answers that I found on using the backup utility as far as actually using it, my phone is rooted now and I know that if I take out the bloat then no more updates. when I make a backup with bootstrap, is it an exact copy of my current OS and its contents? or do I need something else to keep the rest with it? if so what would it be, and how does one use it correctly?

Bootstrap...flash it and enjoy! Nandroid the **** out of your self....

when you restore your backup it will be exactly like it was before you flashed your new rom, including all the bloatware, provided you didnt remove them before you backed up. the only thing that you wont have will be all of your apps... but download titanium backup and back up all your apps, and as soon as you flash back, they will all automatically start downloading... here is a link on how titanium back up works...

and check this thread out, it helped me

that is incorrect.

you will indeed have all of your apps. a nandroid backup is a snapshot of how your phone's file system is configured. the back is the EXACT state of how your phone is when its backed up. when you restore that backp file your phone will be exactly the same as when you backed it up. including text messages, phone calls, apps, etc

Exactly, there is one caveat though. You have to make sure you don't go back to an old backup with incompatible bootloaders when restoring old backups.

Example:

You have a back up of your stock Froyo 2.3.315 rom. You can't restore this backup once you load a 2.3.430 rom because the bootloader has been changed.

Yeah. And even if it got to the point where you needed to be stock again and
you run into a problem such as what xliderider pointed out, you can always SBF.

Anyway, if you're already on .340 just make a backup already and you're fine.

cant recover

says that the MD5 is missing, i tried to go back to my stock ROM from gummyjar and now i cant. im afraid to try it manually in clockworkmod cause i don't need a 500$ paperweight. what can i do to use my backup?

I bet you renamed the backup file, remove all spaces from the name, this error happens if you rename file with spaces, after doing this the backup should work again.. And I am not sure what you mean by doing it manually, you have to do it manually, the restore process don't start automatically.

anything i can name it or put it somewhere that clockwork will use it? or can i go into clockworkmod manually (rebbot into recovery) and do it on the menus?

Thats the only way you can do it is to boot into recovery... Are you opening app and selecting Bootstrap Recovery, ok and Restart Recovery. What option are you using to restore recovery when it restarts into recovery?

i was on .345 then went to GummyJar 2.5 straight from ROM manager, i opened bootstrap and got permissions, then DL'ed and installed GJ in ROM Manager, everything else went flawlessly, i just discovered gummyjar isnt for me, its having big Email and GPS issues, and i would really like to just go back to what i was 15 mins ago

when i try to use my revovery, it is throught ROM manager, i thought that there were all kinds of funny things you have to do to do it manually in clockwork. i tryed getting permissions from bootstrap, then going to ROM manager and restoring my backup, do i just boot into recovery and then pick backup/restore, then pick my Nandroid? no mounting and unmounting system and all that jazz?

That is correct.
