I believe he means shouldn't..if you install the update.zip file, it will technically root your phone, still wont allow wifi tethering, for that you would need to load a rom, which is what he is referring to with the virgin 2.0.1 rom

not exactly sure, you could try..I don't know if it will let you though..if you're worried about the dangers of loading custom roms, you could always go through DMUpdater, which pretty much does everything for you, and loads a ROM thats not too far off from the stock..and has the option to load wifi tethering.. Here is the link, if you'd like to investigate..

I have a jailbroken ipod touch and a psp with custom firmware so is this kinda the same thing or is it a lot more dangerous cuz with an ipod you can just restore using Itunes and with a psp you can use the. Pandora battery that you use to hack it to flash a official firmware so I just am asking so many questions but you guys are being very helpful thanks a million

The fear is understandable, and you shouldn't do anything that you don't think you can handle, but the actual rooting process is alot easier than it sounds..

Cuz even if you brick an ipod you just put it an dfu mode which is kinda like recovery on the droid but its just a black screen and you plug it in to the computer and it says we have detected an ipod in recovery mode would you like to restore its that easy so I just don't want to brick and then be like oh crap no way to restore. Isn't there a way to restore your phone in recovery? Will your droid sync with your gmail and get your apps/contacts back? And then all you would need to do is backup your music what else is there to backup?

EDIT music and most of all the other stuff is saved to the sd card

I've never bricked so I don't know exactly how the process would go, but as far as backing up everything, programs like Astro can backup apps onto your sd card, and you're correct in that your gmail account is signed up with your apps as well.

dont worry about bricking your phone in the forums and sticky they have ways to unbrick your phone and flash back to 2.0, 2.01, or 2.1 it will wipe everything and you will have to activate your phone again but from their just sign into your google account and your emails and apps will come back. thiers is almost nothing to worry about. Have fun with modding your droid.
