FIRST everyone should know to never perform a factory reset with a custom recovery installed on your phone, it will brick. Why? A factory reset with stock recovery wipes /data only(system is untouched). A custom recovery wipes /data AND /system when a factory reset is performed meaning your phones file systems will be wiped causing the brick. One more thing you should know is to never do a factory reset from the privacy menu it will cause the same thing to happen.
Having had this happen to me as well as several others on these forums I feel the need to post this.
When booting your phone into recovery do not use the traditional hardware button method. It will boot into a factory reset menu not recovery. I believe this is a new feature LG is implementing into their new phones to stop rommers/modders.
As a workaround download a reboot app from the market or boot into recovery using adb.
