Bricked Thunderbolt by flashing MR2 update on Rooted phone

Not sure if this is the best thread, but I'm not sure of best options. actually totally confused!

running original stock rom 1.12.605.6 and want to flash custom rom, because got nailed by ota and stuck at exclamation mark. did recovery and back up then reset to factory settings and lost root, but phone works fine, though ota still gets me weekly and have to reset again.

did a restore to get back to root, and want to do a custom rom to totally fix.
don't know which to choose. bamf forever? soab? which one? other?

some threads say don't need a new radio or kernel for custom rom... not sure

need advice about which rom that will work and link to download and if any uniques steps.

so appreciate any help you could give. would love to hear from Cyber Warrior. need that kind of detail.

First, you need to know what radio you have loaded.... Settings > About phone > look for Baseband version number... tell us what you have!!! The latest Gingerbread Radio's work great with most of the ROM's I've used... Forever included.

Second, pick a ROM... Forever is a good choice, but you will need to flash 1.0.8 before you flash the 1.0.9 patch.

Finally, load the ROM.. forget about custom kernels... the one that comes with the ROM will work just fine.

Stock radio 1.16.00.0223r

That is a OLD Froyo radio... check out the "Latest Radio" link in my signature below... you will need to upgrade your radio to a newer Gingerbread radio if you want to use any of the newer Gingerbread ROMs... I'm using the latest from the 2.11.605.3 RUU. The radio files are actually two radio files... LTE radio and CDMA radio... if you use the link I provided below you will need to flash them one at a time... download the first file, flash it, boot up, then remove the first file, download the second file, flash it, boot up, remove the second file before loading the custom ROM!!!! Then load a custom ROM.

Also, if you have not flash a ROM or a Radio... please read the "How to for ROMs" link in my signature... it is how you should do both ROMs and Radio... the radio instructions are in either Post #3 or 4 of that thread.

thanks, I thought it might be old because I haven't seen it mentioned in the threads.
How do I remove the first and second file. not from cwm? or by using the computer?
I have the old pg05img.zip on the sd. do I need to remove those too when I flash the new rom?
Is there a link to both Forever Rom, 08 and the 09 patch?

Link for Forever: http://forums.androidcentral.com/th...2-11-605-0-sense3-0-bamf-forever-1-0-7-a.html

Download link for Forever 1.0.9: [GB][2.11.605.5][Sense3.0]BAMF Forever 1.0.9

Depends if you like Sense or not... flash both (don't set up your phone) if you want and take a quick look at them... then keep the one you like better.

Download both ROMs... flash one... check it out real quick... if you don't set up the phone, manually boot into Recovery (volume down + power button) and then flash the other ROM. Keep the one you like better.

And yes... the radios will work with both ROMs.

Edit: You can actually just hold down the power button while the phone is on to bring up the Recovery boot option.... restart>recovery

You said you still have a pg05img.zip on the SD card. Make sure you delete those when you're done using them otherwise you're gonna run into problems when trying to boot into CWM Recovery to flash the ROMs.

Same goes when installing the radios ... after you flash the cdma radio zip... remove it before flashing the LTE radio... then remove it again before you flash any Roms.

You can only keep one pg05img.zip on the SD card at a time. When done with the radios... delete them from the SD card.

Is there a way to fix phone from cwm? then flash new rom later?
when i flash the new radio how do i remove it after?
I am new at this and appreciate all your work!

I'm getting lost on all the steps.
first things first....
1. download new radio
2. flash it
3. remove it
4. download second radio, flash and remove
5. remove current pg05img.zip already on phone
6. download custom rom and flash
there should be some reboots and more removes in there somewhere

can we go through it step by step. this seems like something I can't find in the threads..

1. Backup current ROM: Backup in Post #1
2. Install Radio Post #3
3. Remove PG05IMG.zip file of the RADIO.
4. Repeat step 2-3 with second radio.
5. Download custom ROM by following: Install Post #2

Either connect your phone to a computer using a USB cable or use a file manager app from the phone.

Astro File Manager is free in the market.
In the app... long press on a file to rename/copy/paste/move...etc..

thanks guys.
I'm supposed remove the current pg05img.zip already on sd card before I load the new one, right?

I plugged into usb, deleted pg05img.zip. in the process the software update came up and rebooted the phone. seems i can't do anything without freezing. I could reset to factory settings but then i lose the root. any suggestions? something to tell the update to stop trying would be great!

You might need to buy a cheap USB SD Card adapter... you can take your SD card out of your device and plug it into the adapter, then remove the existing PG05IMG.zip file, then download the first radio file and put it on your SD card... place the card back in your device... boot up in hboot and flash the first radio file... after it's been installed remove the battery and do the same thing above to remove the file and put the next radio file onto your card using the adapter... and you can put the custom ROM onto the sd card too... then flash the second radio file, then boot into Recovery and flash the ROM... after it comes back up you can remove the second radio file.

Seems like a lot of these posts are popping up this weekend. Guess a lot of people are rooting without doing much research.

Yep. Fortunately there is a lot of good help here.

Sent from my Bolt via Tapatalk.

yep, and some of us need all the help they can get. you are right. I should have done more research.
I thought rooting the phone meant ota couldn't come through anymore. Nothing in the early research that I saw warned about doing a custom rom to avoid this. but obviously don't check the threads as often as I should. thanks for the help.
still having problems...
downloaded first radio, saved to sd... shows up in the computer, but not on the phone. renamed it PG05IMG.zip. it show in the computer as disc image file. the rest on the sd are file folders.
did I save it to the wrong place? why doesn't the phone show it when i start in hboot?

First, make sure the actual name of the file is PG05IMG.zip.... right click the file and select Properties... make sure it's not named PG05IMG.zip.zip

Second, the file must be put in what is called the Root... for example if the SD card in the adapter shows up as D: then the file should be put on D: NOT any folder under D:, but in it's root folder.

Finally, do not extract anything from the zip file... you must download the file... it shouldn't need to be renamed... and copy that file on to the root of your SD card.

thanks for replying. thought i was on my own for awhile....
under right click properties...
file is on the root. E:
file is named properly.
didn't extract anything. It doesn't make sense. I can see it on the root along with the other folders, but when I look from recovery it isn't there.
