Broken Screen

I have had a similar situation with our Galaxy Note 2. We purchased it less than two months ago to replace our home phone, has never been dropped or mistreated, but the glass fractured from top to bottom while I had it to my ear. There is no evidence of impact, just a thin hairline crack. Unfortutnately my husband had cancelled the insurance the day before since we haven't been taking the phone from the house and the phone company had a $200 deductable. I called AT&T who said since it was cracked glass, the warranty doesn't cover it even though it wasn't dropped. Then the guy from AT&T who wanted to help, called Samsung, who told us that with cracked glass, it doesn't matter how it happens, I still have to pay to get it replaced! I was told that I could ship it to them, but of course they wouldn't be liable for any further damage, have my credit card on hold for the amount of the repair, they would then inspect it to see if the crack was due to a fault in manufacturing. They had suggested that it could have happened in shipping but basically after it leaves the factory they can't help me. I haven't decided what to do about it yet. It's still useable now, I'm worried that if I send it to Samsung it will be damaged further and they will request the money to have it fixed. I miss my old Motorola phone that I carried for almost 4 years! Yes, it was a bad call to cancel the insurance, but I never imagined we would pay that much for a phone to have it break while I'm talking on it!.

I'm with Cattails on this one, if I was to drop my phone and crack the screen it would be my fault. I would not expect a new phone because of my careless idea to not to carry my device in a protective case.

It is always terrible for something like this to happen but take it as a lesson learned. If you are going to invest in an expensive phone buy a proper case or be prepared to shell out some repair $

I would bet that a screen could break from any fall above a few inches if it lands just right to cause the right kind of stress on the glass. The variables involved in a free falling phone are vast.

Also, how can you tell your device is defective if your inpecting it after it has been dropped? Perhaps the impact of the fall caused the "uneveness" your speaking of?

The fall was from my pants pocket...while I was sitting on the toilet. My pants were around my knees. That's how far it fell. I would call that "defective". Also, when I originally purchased the phone, there were no cases. I have since purchased an Otterbox.

I cracked my note 2 screen a couple of weeks ago. Guess who's fault it was.....mine! The same way it was your fault for breaking yours. Did u get insurance on the phone? Doesn't sound like you did. And now you think you are entitled to a replacement or a free fix? Get real. The phone isnt defective. When you lay the phone on its back it rocks. My does it and so does every other note2 out there. It is because of the stylus housing! Plus the bigger screen makes it more susceptible to being damaged. What a joke.

You broke it. Either pay to get it fixed or use it like it is. Its your fault.

I think you missed the post. Yes, I have insurance. I laid the phone on it's FACE and noticed it wasn't even which indeed would cause tension on the glass. The phone slid out of my pocket in my bathroom while I was sitting on the toilet...my pants were around my ankles at the time. That's less than a few inches off the groud. I'm a pretty damn intelligent guy. I didn't come here to whine about something that was "my fault"...and apparently other users have experienced similar problems...but thank you for you constructive advice. Dooley noted.

Super pissed also, dropped my phone and screen cracked you would think judging by the price they would be a hell of alot tougher.

I have an otter box and dropped my phone from my desk in my office and it cracked the screen badly. Samsung says that the screeen is not made with Gorilla Glass 2 in the US and they will not give a concession on repairs. PISSED!!! And btw, Sprint charges $11/month for insurance and an additonal $200 for repairs when Samsung will do it for $0/month, $179.00 and a new warranty. I still will not pay. I promised I wouldnt get a new phone until my contract expired.

Its all in the way in lands. Ive dropped my phone from 4 feet before and not a single problem. If it falls and lands 100% face down flat, the screen will explode Its just the way the forces flow through and then back into themselves, think water ripples.

Geez reading this post is frustrating. I've dropped my GN2 numerous times and the most I've done is shipped the silver lining on the edge *knock on wood*. But then people complaining about the deductible...really? You pay your car insurance every month...you wreck your car, you pay a deductible. While the price is never very pretty, it has to be paid before anything is done. It sucks you broke your phone, but I doubt Sprint and Samsung will do anything for you...they are money hungry companies (like every other company out there) and they just want their money.

I so feel your pain. I JUST bought the Note II at Verizon 48 hours ago. I did not buy a case because they had NONE IN STOCK so I ordered one online... it's due Monday. I was sitting on the floor and the phone slipped out of my pocket. Yep... shattered glass. Please, I do not feel "entitled" but a phone should be able to slip out of your pocket and hit the floor. My Bionic fell out of my car and hit concrete numerous times and survived easily. Everything still works but the broken screen is ugly and sharp to the fingers. Verizon couldn't care less. The two week "carefree bring the phone back" is void because of damage and samsung will repair it for a small fortune. Luckily for me, I do have insurance. However, $100 to replace my new, 48 hour old phone with one I'm sure is refurbished is not making me happy at all. Be serious, are these things that fragile? I wish I'd never bought this phone. How can you protect any phone that much? I accept that I dropped it but everyone who saw this was absolutely shocked. I'm sure it just hit in the wrong place but now I'm going to be really paranoid to use the new one. How sad. No kudos to Samsung for this one. Oh, and blaming the large screen is odd since my Galaxy Tab is bigger and much sturdier.... just can't explain it as a size issue.
