I have had a similar situation with our Galaxy Note 2. We purchased it less than two months ago to replace our home phone, has never been dropped or mistreated, but the glass fractured from top to bottom while I had it to my ear. There is no evidence of impact, just a thin hairline crack. Unfortutnately my husband had cancelled the insurance the day before since we haven't been taking the phone from the house and the phone company had a $200 deductable. I called AT&T who said since it was cracked glass, the warranty doesn't cover it even though it wasn't dropped. Then the guy from AT&T who wanted to help, called Samsung, who told us that with cracked glass, it doesn't matter how it happens, I still have to pay to get it replaced! I was told that I could ship it to them, but of course they wouldn't be liable for any further damage, have my credit card on hold for the amount of the repair, they would then inspect it to see if the crack was due to a fault in manufacturing. They had suggested that it could have happened in shipping but basically after it leaves the factory they can't help me. I haven't decided what to do about it yet. It's still useable now, I'm worried that if I send it to Samsung it will be damaged further and they will request the money to have it fixed. I miss my old Motorola phone that I carried for almost 4 years! Yes, it was a bad call to cancel the insurance, but I never imagined we would pay that much for a phone to have it break while I'm talking on it!.
