Building Penetration

I was hoping for better building penetration due to the lower 700 MHz band. Today, I was at the gym to do some cardio and I lost my 4G connection and dropped down to 3G. I got max download and upload speeds of 0.1 Mbps. My friend who tethered her old Sprint Touch Diamond to her UMPC got 1.0-1.5 Mbps down and ~0.2 Mbps up.

I guess the higher complexity of LTE requires a higher SNR in order to maintain its connection even though the 700 MHz signal has less attenuation through solid objects as compared to higher frequency ones.

I'm on the 24th floor of an apartment building in Boston and my 3G service was awful. LTE works great throughout the building and in other places where 3G was spotty.

And 4G has much better signal coverage and penetration than 3g.

The difference between 850 and 700 in practice is almost nil. If LTE has better range and penetration it isn't because of the frequency difference.

It's the other way around. But vzw's 700mhz bands are the higher frequency, close to 800mhz actually. The 850 evdo is more like 846. There's almost no advantage gained by the lower frequency.

From this experience, the slightly lower frequency didn't help at all and I'm guessing LTE requires higher signal quality than EV-DO or it's switching to EV-DO when I could still get some LTE signal at maybe slightly higher speeds. I don't know.
