@all

Peep's, this is a friendly community environment. I assure you i can look up most of you poking fun and probably find a question YOU asked that I think is android 101. Some of you, I might have even helped and you didn't notice any smug attitude. Please gang, while i know its easy to hide behind the anonymity of a screen name, think of this as a group of friends/family. Were all here to help. Now let's hug it out!!!!!!!!!!!!

To the OP, while i would never recommend leaving your cell in direct sunlight, hot day or not, if this is something you think would commonly happen id suggest maybe picking a case that helps with this situation OR, worst case scenario, pick a phone without metal on it. I personally prefer HTC devices due to the AMAZING hacking community but that may be less important to you.

Hope these guys didn't scare you off and no matter what device you pick, it's an Android device and you keep coming back to AC

Sorry about that happening to your child. That sucks and I would also be upset if one of my kids got burned picking up my phone.

I for one have learned from this mistake. I can leave my phone on my dashboard and heat the kickstand up. Then when I get out of the car I can use it as a weapon if needed. Get to close and I will "Hot Phone"ya. Just one more reason to both love and fear the kickstand.

I wonder if it would still get real hot with an invisashield skin over it? That might be an option for you and this way you would not lose the function of the kickstand.

Wow. thanks for all the useless responses. I guess most of the people here don't actually get out of their basements to go anyplace except soda or to see midnight showings of comic book movies. I would imagine most of you would end up a smoldering pile of ash if you tried to go to a place like a playground during daylight.

I've owned a ton of phones, I seem to recall taking all of them outside, leaving them in my car on occasion, leaving them in the sun, holding them every possible way imaginable.

I did not leave it out for a day, we're talking minutes.

And I don't ever recall being burned or feeling extreme heat from my blackberry tour, 8830, 8820, pearl, my old motorola Q, any of my various razrs, treos, or countless other phones. I remember quite a few of those devices over the years getting toasted and breaking in the heat, but never being so hot they could burn from the touch.

I also don't recall other phones having such a large piece of steel which could heat up so quickly on the outside of the phone.

flame away

Well, this one does.

Honestly...It's a piece of metal, in direct sunlight, RIGHT under the battery...of course it's going to be hot. Hell, mine gets hot sitting in my pocket at work for a couple hours at a time.

So, I'm curious - how bad was this "nasty burn"? Surely, your description and apparent outrage makes it out to be second degree or worse. Did you take your daughter to the hospital? Document the injury with pictures? I'm sure, when faced with a medical bill and the threat of potential litigation for a personal injury claim, HTC and Sprint might be motivated to look further into this potential problem.

On the other hand... if your daughter just said "ow" and the skin of the "burn site" simply turned a rosy pink for 10 minutes or something... maybe not so much, and rightly so, in my professional opinion.

... she grabbed it and got a nasty burn from the kickstand, even though my phone was in a protective bumper and even though the kickstand wasn't in the 'out' position. This was on a sunny day.

It was a sunny day. The kickstand is metal. Metal is an excellent conductor. Its going to get warm and will do so in a relatively short time. Something to keep in mind is that simply because (in the right circumstances) a piece of metal can heat up to... say 115F in 5 minutes, in direct sunlight that doesn't mean that 5, or 10, or even 60 minutes later it will have necessarily heated up any more.

One last thing to consider - who or what is to blame if a child receives a burned finger from reaching up to touch a hot burner on the stove? The stove? The child? The parent? Perhaps the refrigerator that was standing right there the whole time ad didn't do anything to stop it?

Now for something completely different:

Haikus are easy.
But sometimes they don't make sense.
Refrigerator.

And now for something completely different: Clickity

Okay that's enough if you cant contribute something positive to this thread then stop posting. I am going to start passing out infractions.

True story:
OP I left my EVO in my truck the first week I had it I needed to charge it because the battery was low it wasn't even a hot day. When I got back to my truck I grabbed my EVO just didn't think about it and sure enough the kickstand was hot lucky I just barely touched it so it didn't burn me but I almost dropped the phone. I hope everyone understands that this is something people should be aware of that is not an issue on other devices.

Later,
Dave

I am just curious if anyone has run into something similar...

When I place my EVO down, I place it down camera up to avoid getting the lens scratched.

I recently was in a park with my child, put my phone down for literally a few minutes, and when we got back, she grabbed it and got a nasty burn from the kickstand, even though my phone was in a protective bumper and even though the kickstand wasn't in the 'out' position. This was on a sunny day.

I never thought it about as a design flaw before, but I'm thinking I need to either:

1. rip it out and construct some sort of filler or replacement, or
2. return it and get an Epic 4G when it comes out shortly

Thats what happens when a metal shiny object sits in the sun for to long. Anyways you can get the Body Glove hard case from Sprint Stores so you dont have to worry about the lens and dont have to lay it face down anymore since it protects the lens from getting scratched.

i thought id post some pictures to show how the Body Glove case looks on the phone

I remember years ago, when I had a Nokia phone, I changed the plastic case for a metal case.. then being the rocket scientist I am, left it in the sun for a few minutes... Unfortunately while it looked cool, it was hot.. I learned the same lesson, metal phone + 5 minutes in the sun = burned fingers..
I then went and put on a plastic case after that.. Didn't look as good til I found the Chameleon cases (again, this was *YEARS* ago, pre smartphone days).

I'd consider it a lessoned learned, and hope your daughter wasn't hurt too badly.. Whie the kickstand is cool (all my friends love it), I wonder if they had made it out of plastic if it'd be better, or have other issues.

I am honestly not trying to make fun of anyone. Everyone has issues with things, I think we all understand that.

I think what makes this funny to us is not that the kickstand got hot, it is metal after all. It is the fact that this is now a design flaw and will be such an issue in the future, as he intends to KEEP leaving the Evo out in direct sun, that he needs to modify the phone over it!

I mean he is now going to be leaving the Evo in the sun on purpose and needs to remove it as it gets hot!

So the issue has moved on from an accident, which is sad that the kid got hurt of course, to just silly because you should not do that to begin with and if you do you should expect metal to absorb the heat.

If you go swimming or something and leave your keys laying in the sun and they get really hot you would expect that right? You don't go to the car forums complaining that they need to make special non heat absorbing keys for when that happens. Just put metal under cover!!! i:Di

I thank the OP as this gave me a really good laugh.

I thank the OP as this gave me a really good laugh.

Me too..

I guess cars have design flaws too if you leave them in the sun.. We should make our cars out of plastic and cloth.

The solution here is.. dont leave it in the sun. or dont let your children touch metal objects that sit in the sun... Hey they gotta learn somehow.. rather it be from a kickstand than grabbing a pot of boiling water on the stove

I'm sorry Mods but I have to say it. This is not "Android 101", and this is not the fault of HTC anymore than it is the fault of the sun. This is life 101, and if more people took responsibility for their own actions this world would be a much better place.

I'm sorry a child was hurt, but as a parent I would teach my child that the EVO is not made by Hasbro, it isn't a toy.

Also, trying to act like everyone around here is some pale comic geek living in a basement is pretty insulting to those are are intelligent enough not to get our children burned.

Why was your daughter playing with the phone at the park? Surely there were other things to interest her there, or were you making your child carry your belongings? The entire situation is odd, and instead of crying or insulting on the forum you should consider doing more productive things as a parent.

And yes the kickstand can get rather hot, his time of year in AZ plastic will burn you if left in the sun too long. :p

In defense of the OP, My son plays on my wife's EVO all the time with that number game, connect the dots and the coloring game. He is only 3.

However, we also teach them (I have 2 kids) what buttons to push and when something bad happens that does not require immediate attention we teach them WHY it happened so that (hopefully) next time they will know better. If it needs immediate attention then we prioritize the lesson after.

We also try to find solutions to such problems. Maybe you can get the new siedo rugged case which covers the kickstand and will protect it more when the kids are playing with it. Then remove it when you go to work etc.

But please do not come on here trying to make a case about how YOU allowed this to happen and that we all should get some money out of this. The only thing that should have come out of this is a caution to others and i am pretty sure a list of solutions would have followed.

In essence, be aware of where you point your fingers. Not all of us want the price of stuff to go up because people can't think for themselves and do not own up to their mistakes (McDonald's coffee anyone? Mom who sued Nintendo cause wii fit told her son he is overweight etc).

Good luck with your daughter and I hope you have taught her that metal gets hot in the sun and does really bad things in the microwave mmmkay

Not to mention you're an easy target for theft if you leave your phone sitting openly on the park bench while you're watching your kid.

My kid is 3, I hate when she gets owies, so I'm not even going to touch that part of it. Athough I will say it's not HTC's fault that metal has a high thermal conductivity.

So, I feel the need to chime in again on this subject... And I'm sure It will anger the OP and possibly the mod's (sorry)... But it needs to be said...

What moron leaves a metal object in the sun and then is surprised that it gets hot? and to agree with other posters, who the heck leaves a $700 device laying on a bench in a park for anyone to stumble across? Third, WHO AS A PARENT DOES NOT TEACH THEIR CHILDREN TO NOT PLAY WITH RANDOM THINGS THAT DO NOT BELONG TO THEM?

I will tell you who, The OP... And every other idiot in this world that would rather blame someone else then themselves for their mistakes... (to OP, I work retail, And deal with people like yourself all the time, and yes, we laugh at your idiocy when you leave.)

Good day to you all!
