Buy 6P Now or Wait for New Nexus or New Note

wow, you went passed 2 generations Note 4 and 5? What is the hurry now.

BUT since you have to be so deprived I would:

Get the Next 6p NOW( I know we say this is the best Nexus phone every year but this time its arguably THEE best phone to come out last year not just the best Nexus Phone)

Sell it a couple months before the new one comes out(during those months use the old one) and put the money in a separate new savings account(like I did with my PS4 even changed the name to PS4)

When the new Nexus is out you get to buy that one at a discounted price(using the your savings) like you would if you were on a contract..but without the contract.

Although I agree with pretty much everything you said, I know for a fact the S7 doesn't have a removable battery.

I read an article that said it did have a removable battery but maybe that was a pre release wishful thinking article.

Amazing times we live in where a device that's less than a year old is considered so antiquated that it's not worth buying anymore.

Yeah, count me in as someone who's taken aback when I hear someone imply that the 6P is yesterday's news. It's far from that... I mean, a couple of years ago, 6 months was a huge difference, now? Not so much.

I mean, my wife has a S7 and, I've said this plenty of times, the S7 really doesn't stand out as the newer phone. It might be quicker, but the 6P is smoother. With all the killer camera features in there Samsung, the 6P's pics come out just a wee bit better.

The next Nexus or Note may be objectively better, but that gap gets shorter every year. And, as most will say, once the Note 6 is out, people will be asking 'Should I wait for the S8??'

The problem with these questions is that there is always something better right around the corner. Also, with the Nexus lineup you don't really know what Google is going to release for their next round of Nexus devices. Could be an entirely different size again that just doesn't work for you. I imagine they will go with the 2 size approach again, but who knows?

But at least you can expect the previous nexus to be available at a cheaper price.

Yeah this. All this. Especially for Nexus devices in particular. Yeah the 6p has been out for almost 6 months now, but pure Android also keeps it in the running for a lot longer too. Compare this phone with the S7. One year from now I garuntee the 6p is the one running smoother and more up to date software. Not because samsung sucks, but because that's the nature of skinned android over stock. And the hardware on the 6p is really, really good. The next Nexus will be a step up, sure. But it will not be a major step up, I promise that.

If you absolutely have to buy your phone when it first hits the shelves and is on the bleeding edge hardware and software wise, wait the 6 months for the new Nexus. If you're okay buying a tried and proven reliable device and don't absolutely need the newest and the highest specs, there is no better time to buy a Nexus than right now.

I was wondering if you can talk and serf the Internet on your Verizon 6p?

Yes you can, you have to have advanced calling active on your account and you will be good to go. I have a 6P for work and we are on Verizon and I am on the road alot so the talk and surf feature is really big for me. So for those who don't know that feature works great with the 6P.

True. Or you can wait even longer and get those new phones at cheaper prices, too. See how that works? Always a better deal and a better device coming.

That has traditionally been true... but I think there's one other factor in play. The number of different models Samsung carries is staggering. I think there are like 12 or 13 different Note 5 models alone, and each of those models has a slightly different codebase, a codebase that needs to be developed and tested. Samsung, like a lot of OEMs, seem to lose interest on their later models once a new one is released... The 6P will get N as soon as its released, and it'll even get the next version... (O I assume)... in a timely manner as well.

As you can tell, I've become rather disenchanted with the OEMs, especially when carriers are in the mix. The Verizon Wireless Note 5 was still on the November 5.1.1 security update as of a week or so ago (Based on Phil's mentioning in the podcast that his finally got bumped up to March... not 6.0, mind you, just a security update to 5.1). That's inexcusable. But that is a topic for a different thread. ;)

I don't understand why everyone avoids Samsung devices because of touchwiz. I install Nova Launcher on every Android phone I buy so the experience becomes the same regardless. Samsung device offers some more features built-in that you need third party apps to accomplish with a Nexus device.

Touchwiz is much more than a launcher. It is the firmware. It impacts menus, things like app intentions and even how storage permissions work, and therefore whether or not you can utilize expandable storage to the fullest extent or not. Samsung has great internal hardware, a very poor physical design and some very useful but visually and interactively horrible software. Nova launcher cannot fix Samsung devices, but it is enough to get some people over the most obvious visual aspects of it. I avoid Samsung devices because they do not make devices that I want. But I respect Samsung devices, particularly their cameras and screen quality.

I'm sure you can agree that there are some benefits to waiting. You probably wouldn't buy an s6 the day before the s7 is to be announced.

So the question about when it starts being worth waiting is not trivial, and of course varies with your preferences and your current device.

At this point, with a phone in good condition, I would wait for the next nexus rather than get the 6p. If only because everyone is raving about the gap between the sd810 and the 820.

I'm not sure comparing a 1 day wait to a 6 month wait is right. But I get your point and agree. If you have a phone you can live with for another 6 months then go ahead and wait, but some people just get that itch for new. That's a personal decision.
I use my phones for about 2 years then start looking at new ones. Always leaves me with a functional backup and there is enough advancements in 2 years to notice a difference. :)

The Note 4 & 5 passed me buy because I was locked in a 2 year contract. I'm now out of contract.
Next phone will be an outright purchase.

One thing people have to keep in mind is this; phones are fast now. Back in the not-so-distant past, whenever a new processor generation came out, there was a big difference... such as comparing the Snapdragon 600 (early 2013) to the 800 (late 2013). Now? Processing power has passed processing needs, so the perceived speed improvements will be kind of, well, 'meh'.

I own a 6P and my wife has an S7. Now, in a lot of respects, the S7 is a little quicker, but you wouldn't really know the difference unless you held the two side by side really. Sure, on some I/O heavy apps like some games, it might load a couple of seconds slower, but my quality of life does not depend on being able to start Temple run NOW!!!! But one thing that is immediately obvious when going between the S7 and 6P is that the 6P actually feels like the faster phone. Everything is smoother.. transitions, window launches, using the Overview to switch apps, scrolling, etc. The S7 might do task A quicker, but it kind of spits and coughs in the process... like a dude running for his life.

Now, sure, whatever Nexus drops this fall is not going to be weighed down by a hamfisted OS like Touchwiz, and if you run benchmarks, it'll post monster high scores compared to the 6P, but in hand, it just won't seem quite that much faster. Why? Scale.... Shave 2 seconds off a task that once took 5 seconds, vs taking .4 seconds off a task that took 1 second.

I'm usually a 'buy now' kind of person since I know that there will always be something bigger, faster, better around the corner. Tomorrow's hot new phone will always become yesterday's old news.

I agree. The processor is reason enough.

Currently have the Note 4 waiting on the note 6, though the 6p seems awesome, but I don't know if I could do without the IR. Anybody know a way around that?

Get a new AV Receiver that has Wi-Fi. I never use the IR blaster anymore.
