Buy a Xoom or wait for Tegra 3

So I have major gadget lust for a tablet, but I am not 100% sold on the Xoom. While it does have very nice specs and many people have posted it seems half baked (perhaps the wifi version is different). But I know Honeycomb apps are just ramping up and that stability will improve, but the question is whether I should buy now, or wait for a tablet sporting Tegra 3?

Tegra 3 is supposed to be the quad core version and as far as I know is ready to begin being included in devices. So I expect that Tegra 3 devices should start showing up by fall.

What do you guys think? Is a Wifi Xoom currently worth the $600?

Yes, it is worth the $600. If you are afraid of buyers remorse, buy the XOOM at Costco. You get 90 days to return it for a full refund.

Nope Costco is 90 days. Checked, double checked, and triple checked. Already returned a Xoom when it wouldn't wake up and the return was as painless as any other Costco return. Walked in with a broken Xoom and 10 mins later walked out with a new one. You can't always wait for the next best thing or you will end up in the never buy anything loop. The Xoom does have it's quirks but it is getting better every day.

Yea, I know waiting for the next best thing is dumb in the tech world. The reviews I have read for the Xoom are just a bit underwhelming. I think it is more a matter of deciding of whether I want to be an early adopter or not.

That's what's nice about Costco. There's really no harm in being an early adopter because you'll have until June to decide if it's worth keeping! lol

It is important to note that Costco's 90-day return policy does not cover the penalty you will have to pay if you get the unit that is Verizon data plan subsidized. If you return within the 1st 30 days, your set. Of course, if you paid full price for the 3G version, you have 90 days to return the unit and only pay for 3G data for what you use.

I think those tablets won't be out until late 2011 or early 2012.

I'd say you will get way more than $600 or $800 of usefulness out of the Xoom until then.

I highly doubt that Tegra 3 will ship before 2012. They just started shipping Tegra 2 tablets, changing it to 3 is too quick. Xoom2 will most likely use Tegra3, until then I would get a wifi only Xoom and sell it after Tegra3 starts shipping in mass form.

I have a question about the XOOM 3G return at Costco. If you return it, do you get the money back for the data plan too?

I don't know about waiting for a tegra3 but I'm waiting for one with a regular SD card. I dont understand why the Dell streak has one but all the others use uSD.

Buy now or wait for the next whiz-bang thing? Classic question, but the wrong one to ask.

The first question you need to ask yourself is "Will the current generation of hardware meet my needs?" If the answer is "yes", then jump in. If the answer is "no", you should wait.

It's that simple. If you wait for the next thing, you'll never enjoy the here and now. There will always be the next thing. When you are considering that Tegra3 powered device, there will be a Tegra4 in the works. And so on... and so on... and so on...

Meanwhile everyone else enjoys and benefits from the current technology and you're standing on the outside with your nose pressed up against the glass.

If the current version of XOOM does what you need, it's the platform you should buy... now.

On the other hand, it sounds like the funds may be a little tight. I personally don't believe in using credit for luxuries like this. If an outlay of $600 is a stretch for you now, it probably won't be such a stretch in late 2011. You'll have all that time to save and you'll be getting a great product then. If money is tight now, wait for Tegra3.

I bought from Costco & spent quite a bit of time talking to the people at the Verizon booth & customer service trying to figure out the deal.... In the end I was told the following:

You have 14 days to return the Xoom and cancel your Verizon contract.

Costco will do a one-time price adjustment for 90 days if they drop their prices.

You can return the Xoom within 90 days & no restocking fee, but you'd still have a Verizon contract.

I can't guarantee any of this, but its what I was told.

Money is not the major issue, I guess in the back of my mind I was debating if I wanted to wait for another honeycomb tablet or just go for the Xoom. Also there is a slight desire for the HP touchpad. I am just a cautious person. With the costco 90 day return policy I will likely pickup the Xoom.
