Buyer's remorse and the LG G6

Headphone jack is not about DAC or quality of thereof. Its abkut convenience of being able to plug your heapdphones or any other 3.5 mm aux cable right into the phone without having to carry silly adapters all the time. I personally dont give a damn about DAC or audiophile anything for that matter. Its about convenience that is being taken away by apple and google and htc for no reason whatsoever.

Well... I am not one to use multiple sets of headphones, I have one wired set and one BT set. So the dongle is currently seated on my wired set, where it has been since I opened up the box and took the stuff out.

And I get that it can be an inconvenience. But there's a difference between an inconvenience and a problem that warrants a massive uproar. They way people are carrying on, Google disabled the ability to make a phone call. And in most of the discussions, they all talk as if the adapters just don't exist and it is impossible for them to use their wired headphones any more.

After I have a heated argument discussion with my wife about exchanging a phone again so quickly after purchasing I am likely going to go with a Pixel 2. In terms of product support and updates, the Pixel 2 has a decidedly large advantage here. In terms of depreciation, the Pixel 2 will be worth more after two years than an LG G2, which can be found for half the amount before you get into the second hand marketplace where prices have tumbled.

Having said this, I do not believe the LG G6 is a bad phone by any means. If I knew for a fact that this would be a device with a long support life I would gladly keep it.

I agree... Other than issues I had with with camera quality, the G6 was really really good. But long term support + camera were my concerns as well.

You didn't consider the lgv30? I bought it and it's a great phone. Just throwing another in the mix lol

The V30 is a really nice phone and due to various circumstances, I was quite close to keeping that... It was an improvement over the G6 in most every way.

'cept the camera still had too many issues. The processing was a bit less heavy handed than the G... But it still pooped it's pants in lower light. The Google Camera helped things a little, but not enough.

Honestly, I am no sure where all the praise I've seen with both phones' cameras. It's like 66% of the time, it's great.. and they only looked at those when they tested them. Or they just overlooked the problems for whatever reason. Dunno.

The camera on those phones are good, it's just not his cup of tea.

I had absolutely no problem with the V20 or G6 cameras.

I don't know, I just don't put much stock in comments like 'oh, it takes much better pictures when you use manual mode'. I can get a manual camera on my Pixel, I just download one. I don't think you should need to start fussing with manual settings to get a usable picture. And time is often of the essence...

I understand what you're saying. Many people prefer point and shoot and aren't accustomed to manual cameras. I'm used to that, since I've used manual cameras with 35mm film. I'm used to taking multiple shots and even using an auto-generated or a release cable with a camera mounted on a tripod, and shooting a roll of 36 photos, only to get 1 or 2 good shots.

Nope, the V30 was not on my short list of devices. I'm looking for a two-year phone (possibly three) and believe that I want something with stronger software support like a Google Pixel or even an iPhone - yes, I said iPhone. Pixel is about as close as one can get to a software / hardware marriage that Apple has with the iPhone.

To be fair I try to look at the worst pictures taken by a particular phone to see if it's something I could live with. All of those wonderfully shot daytime photos do nothing for me other than show what the phone has the potential to do. What happens when you are in the most unfortunate setting to take a picture? I want to see lots of noise and touchy focus. These phones won't replace my Canon SLR by any means but they will generally be with me more often than a bulky camera with various lenses.

I'd like to think that people are using full-on auto for the most part. I just simply don't see a large percentage of users, casual and power user alike, running their camera on manual settings unless they are capturing a (very) still image of something that they want to apply some artistic flair to.

I want a "say cheese" camera on my phone that produces consistent results when I use it. I also want to be able to install 3rd party applications like Scanbot and take photos of documents and receipts and upload them to Google Drive if I need to. Lastly, I want a camera that I can open up and tinker with to try and get the best possible shot of something. I have played around with and understand the concepts of various manual shooting methods, so for me it's hard to not want to tweak settings if they are available.

That's often my personal gauntlet that I use to evaluate phones. Just about every top tier phone can take a really good shot there. But what about if we're standing in line inside a ride at Disney... Or along the strip by the beach at night... I don't really have time to fuss with exposures and ISO values.. I just need to get my phone out and take a picture as soon as possible.

In these situations, you're really not going to find anything that can handle those situations better than the 6P/Pixel/Pixel 2. They all handle those like you have a pro photographer hiding inside your phone setting up the shot.


I posted this in the camera thread but it's worth another mention. This was literally a case of picking up the phone, pointing it and hitting the shutter. I was waiting for my daughter's rehearsal to end and I was just testing the quick launch speed and cared little about what I was shooting.

It just shows how well these things handle challenging shots without you worrying. No way on God's green earth I could get that from my G6 or V30, manual or auto.

Yes I got the 5" model instead of the XL. I am fascinated with the larger screen phones but I am more prone to dropping them than I am with the smaller models.

Right now I love the sheer speed of the device. It's a joy to use and I've already loaded up my phone with the apps that I had on my LG G6. I have tested the camera a little bit, but I am already impressed with the photos it has taken compared to the G6, or any other phone I have owned for that matter. The camera is responsive, the photos are sharp, and the colors are accurate.

This phone in many ways reminds me of an Apple device, back before iOS 11 hit. All of the little things are done just right and as a whole make up a wonderful experience.
