Buying a G3 Tomorrow...

When I got my first Android phone (5 or 6 years ago), I came here to AC and read as much as I could. There is a wealth of knowledge here. Some of it might not make sense the first time you read it, it will start to make sense after a while. And don't hesitate to ask questions. Most people here are happy to help. We were all beginners once. Some specific suggestions:

Read all the informative blog entries on AC that are linked here: LG G3: Specs, review, rumors and release date | Android Central

Read through the G3 forum here, and on other sites. You'll learn a lot.

Search on iPhone to Android here on AC. Here's one thread that might be worth reading: http://forums.androidcentral.com/general-news-discussion/386383-iphone-android.html

Here's another: Eric Schmidt gives a few handy tips on switching to Android from iPhone | Android Central

Also try searching on the phrase Android tips. Some of the links relate to other phone models, but a lot of the information is going to be the same, or very similar. Be sure to check the dates on the posts you're looking at, too. There's a "Getting started with Android" thread, but it dates to 2010, so many of the posts are obsolete. Skip forward a lot, and you might find some good information:

Meyerweb is one of many people here in AC that I have much admiration and respect for because he helps and contributes so much in this community. Thanks for all your help with rooting my Samsung devices the past 4 years buddy! I'm thankful and grateful to have him around here for sure! :)

Well he is a former ambassador :)
A lot of our former team members still stick around and help around the forums :D

First of all, enjoy your phone!

A couple things to look out for and do:

1) Turn off iMessage
2) Before installing any old app, research it and see if it is reliable. They might be quite power intensive and they aren't scrutinized like they are
with apple apps.
3) Your screen will probably eat up most of your power and hurt your eyes so you'll need to dim it
4) Sometimes processes get stuck so you'll need to restart them
5) There is a lot of freedom to make the device truly yours so don't get overwhelmed, there are many fine people on here to answer your questions
6) You'll need to download a third party photo app to get options for photos.
7) Apps sometimes force close themselves.
8) Android has phantom processes sometimes that eat up your battery. I recommend battery monitoring software to know when you need to restart the phone when you look back and see a high amount of idle drain.
9) If you see ANY physical defects when you first get it, take it back immediately. They will cause problems for you down the road
10) I very much recommend getting a third party launcher like Nova

Also get a replacement battery! Once again, enjoy your shiny new phone! :D

First don't buy this phone. This is probably one of the best phones....when it works. The screen regularly will freeze, it will get hot within minutes of using it, the connection both 4G and WiFi is awful where it constantly locks up trying to find a connection. 70% of the cup and memory will be consumed with minimal use. This is a very overrated phone and wish I could take back the phone but sadly passed the time period.

Got the phone today and love it. The battery does seem to drain kinda fast. My screen is 60% of usage and I have the brightness at 25%. Any idea why battery seems to drain fast? Maybe first day or usage?

There is a vast population of G3 owners that have very smooth running phones...

Every phone released has a % of flawed devices. You seem to have purchased one

I wouldn't suggest all G3's are perfect and you shouldn't imply they're all flawed.

Do you have the phone? And if so, did you take yours back and get a new one. It is unfortunate that you feel that way about the G3, but alot of people on here are having no issues at all with it. Nothing at all overrated about the phone outside of perhaps the screen (which is outstanding, but in my opinion, just doesn't have enough content and material out to really show it off yet). Other than that, this is one of the best, well put together devices on the market and I have had an iPhone 5s, M8, S5, AND the Note 3.

My battery improved a lot within the first 5 charges. Not great but good

My screen doesn't freeze. My 4G and WiFi are both fine, what do you mean it locks up trying to find a connection? I usually have around 1GB RAM available on my G3.

It's strange when people with no posts just randomly hop into a thread and slander a phone. No posts about any of these issues at all in an attempt to resolve, just pop in and act as if every G3 has the same problems as yours.

I also noticed this along with it took quite some time to charge.

Over a period of time not long (a few charge cycles) all seemed to balance out nicely.

I average 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 hrs screen on & the occasional 6+. Charging is now relatively quick (haven't timed).

I'm sure it will like mine and others steady itself :-)

Yeah.... I'm 1 1/2 in and it's never warned of any overheating.... Wifi and Mobile radios do a great job of getting and holding a signal, camera is great.... there's a jink in the UI here or there on occasion, but nothing bothersome (i.e. the reports of the G3 lagging are greatly exaggerated). And it charges REALLY fast.

Yes, some people have had issues with their units.... and some are more prone to others when it comes to heating up (maybe a binning thing).... but a lot of people report smooth sailing.

I've been posting on another thread about the battery on my G3. It's very good, assuming you just do the day to day things such as EM, SMS, bit of social networking etc. But if you're gaming, using Sat Nav. or anything screen intensive, I'd grab a spare battery. The screen is big and beautiful, but so can the battery consumption be.

Other than that, best phone I've ever owed. And I've owned faaaaaar too many (according to my wife). She's wrong.

Posts like this really do me in. Just as you seemed to have sadly have had a bad experience, it's not correct to just vent on a thread such as this. Try and at least be a tad constructive. Take it from me - you're just so 'Crackberry'.

I'm a month into the Lg g3, my first android device. (Still use mac computers). The customization (for me) was/is a bit overwhelming, but the great part is that the android community is patient with us. :) I found some UK android magazine at B & N that was helpful. I still don't understand widgets and launchers so good luck with that! Also, read all the articles about going all google on the contacts-I had a sync disaster from which I'm still recovering-the good part is that I can remember, generally, whose no. belongs to whom. My battery life has not been all that good; I'm actually waiting for tmobile to send me a new one (bought too early for that new deal!!!). All that said, I love the camera, the speed of the data, clear calling, etc. Best of luck!!

Most of the stuff he said sounded like over-exaggerated nonsense, but the stutters are definitely there. That's one of the only reasons I didn't get the G3. I saw way too many video reviews, and in my time in store playing with it there were just too many hiccups. I wouldn't call it lag or freezing or any of that stuff. Just not really being smooth and fluid when scrolling. Little things like that. It's probably not a big deal to most, but I'm a bit obsessive about that. I'm sure I overlook other things that drive others crazy. LOL. It's also just a little too wide for me to hold comfortably.

I'm glad the OP and so many others are enjoying the G3 though. I'm all about seeing Android OEMs getting a little more balanced so that Samsung doesn't hold all the cards.

Welcome to Android and congrats on the new device :D
Is there anything specific you think you'd miss coming from iOS?
Just a few apps I think are useful on Android: Google + (Comes with the Photos app) so you can back up your contacts, photos, and videos.
Nova Launcher or Google Now Launcher.
These are most similar to the stock launcher and the former has more customization options than any of the stock launchers.
Swift Key or Google keyboard. I haven't used the keyboard on LG, but the Samsung isn't very good IMO. There are plenty of third party ones, but those two are particularly popular.

Those are the most useful just off the top if my head. Hopefully someone else can mention a few more

I know I'm a little thick when it comes to all the customization-but if you find a good article on the whole launcher thing, I'd appreciate it. Cause I just can't really figure it out, ambassador.

Funny...it was between the G3 and the M8 for me too...but the M8 felt too tall and thin for me (like the iphone).

the phone today and love it.

Glad you're enjoying it! I just ordered my M8 today. Went to 3 local stores today, and none were in stock. I'm looking forward to learning about Android. It is funny though. I don't mind the height of the G3 or M8 (they're almost exactly the same), but the width of the G3 I couldn't comfortably hold without feeling I was gonna drop it.

The M8 is a great phone but the camera is absolutely horrible. I had higher pixels and pic quality in my last flip phone lol (just kidding) If you like taking pics I would pass, but if not, you can't go wrong with that device either.

The camera is the only thing I'm worried about. I'm pretty confident that I'm gonna like everything else about the M8. I've seen really good pics in the M8 forums though, so I'm gonna re-read through those, try their tips, and test the hell out of the camera within my 14 day return window. LOL. The thing is, the M8 is really the only Android device I like as far as the way it feels in the hand. The G3 and a couple other of the flagships are just too wide. The Moto X and a couple others I checked out in store felt really cheap. So if I don't like the M8 I guess I'll head back to iOS, but I'm hoping for the best!! I'll know in a few days when my M8 is delivered.

Sat Nav will kill the battery in any phone. You're using the GPS radio and the LTE or 3G radio simultaneously, repeatedly downloading map data in the background, using a fair bit of cpu to redraw the maps and recalculate your location. And most likely keeping the screen on all the time. Any of the above will drain your battery. All of them at the same time will really drain your battery. Buy a car charger if you're going to use Nav.
