Buying AppMarket software

I have a situation a little different than most, I need to tether my new Xoom in reverse.

I have a hardline ADSL conection, and my Xoom connects to the LAN with WiFi - it's not the 3G model. That works great, I've downloaded some free software. Now I've found some sw I want to buy. The tablet doesn't have a phone number, and my mobile number has nothing to do with this setup (apart from being able to use WiFi itself)

I also have a Google account. Well I have a Google email address, but nowhere does there seem to be mention of paying for anything. I can use PayPal, or VISA, but can't out how to do so.

(yeh, I'm new to this)

Sorry to answer my own post, I just tried to buy something and the payment options appeared, so it's all fixed. Not a good way to introduce myself.:-[

Hi all

It turns out to be not as fixed as I thought. Some apps seem to look for the type of phone I have, then decline my purchase because I'm not using a mobile.

Apps will not install to devices they aren't compatible with. So...using your tablet to get apps for the tablet? Or are you using phone?

Sort of confused. Both of your Android devices should be linked to same Google account. That is how direct link to market opens. When you set up devices, you signed in with a Google account. Assuming you used the same one for both. If so, and you want to put a tablet app on tablet, when you open "market" icon, search for the app. If it shows up, it should be compatible. Download from there.

Now (still assuming same Google account...) if you do not see it in market, doesn't mean it wont work! So....open browser on tablet. Go to WWW.market.android.com

On there, you can sign in using your gmail account. Under settings, you should see both devices. If so, great! Find the app you want. It should show "this app is compatible with some of your devices..." If so, tap install. It will tell you which device it will download to.

Now....here is a caveat...you need to know or be willing to try to see if the app will work on "other" device. Quite often, it will. Example: I have OG Droid phone & Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Wi-Fi tablet. I use SS Launcher on phone. Wanted it on tablet. Used this market to dl to phone. Then, put it into my dropbox account, opened dropbox on Tablet, and installed from there. It works fine. I did same for Tiny Town (?) for daughters Stratosphere. Not available on her market. Was on my other daughter's Droid 2. Logged in to her account on my tablet. Download to tablet. Used file manager to upload it to dropbox. Opened my dropbox account on Stratosphere (didn't install db app...used browser...) Installed game.

If accounts for Google are different, you can download to device app works with, them email or dropbox to transfer (or read device on pc, find file from one, drag and drop to other.. )

Sorry this is so long winded! Shout or pm if needed!

Thanks sherri, I do still have a bit of a problem. I can't find the page you refer to here "...sign in using your gmail account. Under settings..." The gmail account lets me set up my profile, but I can't see devices listed anywhere, and I don't think you're talking about the settings on the tablet.

I know the switch and bait routine for software, having owned a Samsung Jet, but haven't started looking at the file structure of the Xoom yet, I need to find a good tutorial for that (I've been using Linux for 15 years, and Unix on minicomputers before that; I think I'll cope :).

Sorry about being dense with this device thing, I get that the Xoom should show up somewhere, it's the only Android device I own, but just can't find it. It maybe moot, as you point out, the market will only show me apps that will run on the Xoom, just as it should.

Thanks
Rob

From the tablet, open a browser. From the browser, type in: https://market.android.com

When the page loads, here is where you should sign in using your Google account. This will enable you to see the apps you want.
