Hello,

I'm an Android Noob and taking the plunge today. I plan on purchasing the Captivate and have been reading a good bit about it. After reading about loaders, roms, sideloading, widgets, etc. I was wondering if anyone could provide a recommended "best practices" guide for this phone?

I want to run Froyo if possible. Other than that, I will be looking for the best user experience you have found with your Captivate so far.

Thanks in advance

ETA: I'm coming from a BB Bold (heart). I know I won't have BES functionality (*yet*), but if I can use Maildroid or another app to effectively sync my Exchange mail, contacts, and calendar I'll be content.

You won't be able to run Froyo just yet. The official update comes out sometime in September, I think. I'm sure the Xda community will have an unofficial build of Froyo out before then, though. I think the regular email app has exchange, but I'm not too sure. I wouldn't know about that, just use it to sync GMail.

I rooted mine, and it really works wonders. I've heard it runs a lot faster with the LagFix, but I haven't applied that yet.

I'd suggest just downloading some apps and using it for about 2 weeks without changing it significantly and then see where you want to make improvements.

Got mine from mobility.dell.com for $80. Actually, I got two at that price. :)

As for what to do with it, I suggest nothing. This is excellent timing to get used to the phone and its limitations and abilities prior to the Froyo release. Once you have a handle on that, get the update and then worry about rooting and such.

You should be able to handle Exchange (Mail and Calendar) with the stock mail app (I can).

Other than that, like TheBronze says, get used to the phone and the limitations. If you have lag problems after a few days, try out the "1Click Lag Fix" tool in the market.

Take it back in your 30 days window, and wait for the HTC Glacier dual core on TMobile.

That's where I am leaning.

If the EVO was as small, light and fast as the Galaxy S, and didn't have that stupid $10 Sprint wimax fee, I'd be on that. I hope that's what Glacier will be.

Captivate sux balls ^H^H^H er, "rocks."

I'll be picking my Captivate up tomorrow. Can't wait. I've gone hands-on with quite a few phones over the last few weeks and this is hands-down one of the best on the market right now.
