Im looking at the Galaxy Nexus as my new phone but i don't know if i want to go under a 2yr or buy out right for the phone ?

That is a question only you can answer. Can you afford to purchase the phone at full retail now to avoid the contract? What is the reason you want to avoid the contract, do you plan on getting rid of the phone/service prior to the two year mark? I wanted to get my update counter rolling so I chose to use an upgrade for mine and I've had Verizon for nearly 10 years so I'm not going anywhere.

Well I don't know what you want to do either lol. The phone is probably about $600 new (they listed &650 with my Verizon contract, but they listed $750 for my wife's iPhone so who knows). In Europe you don't get phone discounts so they'd know the price.

I just don't like being under a contract what....I was thinking about buying the GSM one but I cant get 4G on it

what everyone else is saying is true, what you do is really up to you. I bought mine outright so that I didn't have to extend or get a contract. I hate cellphone contacts but can afford to buy these things outright, if money is tight, then you have to consider how important it is to you to avoid being in contract.

Figure out what it would cost you to buy one under contract and then to have to pay an ETF if you wanted to leave as opposed to buying one outright and not have to worry about an ETF. There are tradeoffs which only you know how they will affect your finances and your needs.

If you're considering leaving VZW, then you might want to think about buying a Nexus and then having to sell if privately if you leave. But then you also have the ability to buy it under contract and then sell it for more than you paid under contract in order to pay off the ETF.

Out here where I am ATT isn't an option as they don't service this area, Sprint is here but with limited native coverage and TMO isn't a consideration as their only data (where I am) is either 1x or at best edge and pretty slow edge at that.

I personally pay full retail because I don't like being tied to down to carriers and tend to replace my phones at least once a year.

You just need to decide on what you can afford and willing to spend.

I was looking at buying it off of ebay or craigslist but do you think i can keep my insurance if i have a CPE

This has been the only phone I've been comfortable staying with for a full 2 years

I wouldn't buy anything from Craigs list soon after launch. Your just buying a phone that somebody else didn't like, probably because they couldn't get it to work well. That may be related to how they set it up, or it may be a bad device. I'd get it from Verizon or not at all. They have always taken care of me whenever I've had a problem.

If you pay $600 - $650 for the phone, you have no contract to worry about, and when the next Nexus is released in a year (or any other device you want), sell yours on ebay for $400 and your out of pocket cost for the device (about $200) is the same as if you'd bought it on contract.

You don't get any sort of deduction from your plan with Verizon for paying full price for a phone so it makes absolutely no sense to do that if you have an upgrade available or if you're signing a new contract.

If you're signing a new contract, you can get the Galaxy Nexus for $99.99 on Wirefly. If you're upgrading a line, it's $229.99 on Wirefly. Even on Verizon it's $299. ETF (early termination fee) starts at $350 and decreases by $10 every month.

So even if you bought it from Verizon for $299 and end your contract within the first month, the phone would cost you $649, which is what Verizon already charges off contract and the cheapest you can officially buy the Verizon Galaxy Nexus right now. If you end your contract after 6 months, the ETF is $290 and you got the phone for $589 instead of the full price of $649.

In other countries where your plan is cheaper when you bring your own phone, it makes more sense. In the US, there's no reason not to buy new phones on contract and have your carrier pay for most of the phone. I think T-Mobile is the only major carrier that actually offers a discount if you buy a phone full price.
