Bye Bye Note 9 - Hello iPhone X S Max

My wife is an iPhone user who is due the upgrade this year. I think she would "like" the upgrade, but maybe not enough to want to spend the money on it.
She has already said she doesn't like that the "button" is gone.
I have a work iPhone and to be honest, there's nothing compelling enough in the new iPhones to make me want to upgrade during this "cycle".

After 8 years, I'm actually tired of phones with 2-year OS life-cycles. While satisfied with my HTC 10, I've had to replace it due to a failing battery, knowing it will never go beyond Oreo, and that upgrade was a kludge (no Treble support), and Nougat was the best OS on it. That's, frankly, unreasonable when you get right down to it. So I was eagerly awaiting the Iphone XS, because with 512gb, it's worth giving up my expandable memory. But then there's the other thing ---- $1349 is just an obscene price for a phone. If it's more than $750, the handset better sweep the floor and wash the dishes for me before I'll consider it. I am miserable with the argument that these prices are "the new normal." For more than 20 years in technology, prices have consistently fallen for devices ---- if I'm right, this countertrend will hurt the market for these devices.

It is a gorgeous piece of hardware. Notches don't bother me - the XS really hits form factor perfection for me. But it's iOS, and I'm a dedicated Android guy. I've always said Apple products (for the most part) are beautiful and masterfully made, they're just not for me. I don't see a reason to hate on them - if people will buy at the price they set, there's no reason to set it lower.

There were rumors of a X Plus with stylus that would have me intrigued. Apple, please, and your memory management? Throw in 6GB. (I think it's paging and not as good as hype I hear).

At 7 ounces it is a lot of phone weight.

Customized home screen was pushed down the road. iOS move to full native 64-bit and it was too much too quickly that led to an iOS disaster.

I've always carried Android and iPhone. The Note has me spoiled, the Max would be nice, the $100 extra over X is worth it.

I get it's business but this whole 64GB is nonsense.

I'm a Mac user and there's always a breaking point, mine was last year when once again my iMac didn't last more than 4 years. I had enough that add much add in hate Windows I went back, got myself a $500 ASUS notebook instead.

Same goes for the X, I cannot pay Apple's asking price and this is why I have props to Samsung with their pre-order bonus and trade-in offers.

I love iOS too but not for $1,700 CAN.

Taking into account we've not seen these in the flesh so to speak I've seen nothing from the Apple Keynote to draw me to the new iPhones.

Lots of usual Apple chest beating and percentages etc and the usual "our best ever" claims in the keynote.

Apple offering up to $525 instant credit for iPhone X trade-in, up to $250 for Apple Watch and iPad

I don't know why but these. IPhones don't interest me anymore. Just have too many negatives for me: the notch, cannot personalize your phone as much as android. No built in stylus which i use all the time. Only thing that's going for it is imessage. 🤷🏻*♀️

Different use cases... my 2018 iPad is much lighter and thinner than any Chromebook, mostly because I don’t need a keyboard on a media consumption device.

Weight doesn't bother me that much between the two. I have a media consumption device and laptop replacement for the most part all in one device. I rather have it and not need it than to need it and have to go buy it.

When Note 9 came out, everywhere I see is people saying it's just an incremental upgrade from Note 8. Strange that nobody ever says the same thing about iPhone, even though the upgrade is even lesser compared to iPhone X.

I can't fathom using a 6.5" display without an S Pen or Apple Pencil. There's a lot of area to be productive and Apple dropped the ball. Also, watching video in landscape sucks with a notch. I had the iPhone X for 10 months and it just irritated me. It's like someone took a chunk out of one side of my tv. I was sitting in DIA/DEN yesterday watching Infinity War on my 512GB Note 9 and there was no notch interfering with my viewing experience. I was fully immersed in the video and it was great. Apple won't be getting my hard-earned money this year.
