My phone seemed a lot slower and a little hotter than usual lately and when I looked at cached data I had about 1.5 gigs! Once I cleared this the phone is lightning fast again! Was this the solution?

Some apps can build up pretty big data caches without clearing them automatically, so periodically clearing them manually can help in some circumstances. But those caches will eventually build up again. It's easy enough to go to Settings>Storage and clear all cached data by tapping the Cache listing there, but there are also apps that offer a one-touch widget to make it even easier, like App Cache Cleaner.
