CalDav and Carddav

Is Android/S4 compatable ? If I make the move to Android from iOS I would love to be able to keep using the same accounts and not have to go through the import/export and change over to gmail/google for my contacts and calendar events

There is probably a way but I always used Google as my primary calender and contacts even on ios. Here's an article that may help and there are some apps that do sync for the types as well. Just search using the same words you titled this thread.

I read the article seems like these 2 apps will make it easier to move. Anybody tried them thus far? If so how did they work for you?

I've used DAV to access my contacts and Calendar on my own Personal Could Server, cutting the cord from both Google and Apple and it works fine.

i'm used to sync my contacts and appointments using CalDAV and CardDAV on my device. Works fine so far and because Android does not support this out of the box i had installed two special apps to fulfill that job. Wow, thanks for this excellent post! I've been trying to get something like this working for months now. One question: Are there any other choices for an Android calendar app in this setup? I really dislike the built-in app, and would much prefer something that looks more like aCalendar+, TouchCal or even CalenGoo (a month view that shows text descriptions of events is the main feature I prefer).

You can add your iCloud to Android. Id suggest using Outlook as a medium while using an add-in called EVO Collaborator for Outlook thought (its my way)
