Calendar not syncing to gmail account

my new motorola droid razr will not sync to my calendar in gmail. the calendar syncs to the phone but not from the phone to the calendar

when you create a new event on the phone, at the top of the create event window, the initial default calendar is 'phone calendar', so hit the arrow and select your gmail calendar. Once you have done this, it appears it will remember that selection as the default for future events.
