Calibrating compass

I wasn't on the compass screen.

Did it a second time like ceriem and it completed. Took about 2 minutes or so.

Screen did not go to sleep either. Make sure you are looking at a compass, not an animation of a phone rotating. If you see a phone rotating, hit the calibrate button in the bottom right corner.

That did the trick. I tried for like ten minutes on the screen with the phone rotating. Once i hit calibrate and got the compass screen, it was over in under a minute. Thanks for saving from being a moron...

Finally got mine to work, took about 2 minutes of fumbling with it. Now, after all that, I'll never use it.:o

Calibration never turns green --- only red

I've tried many times in and out of the house (way from any metal objects) and can only get the compass to turn red, never green.

Are you on the leaked 2.2 by chance? I was having 10x more problems calibrating on 2.2 than I was on 2.1. I would get a red compass after about 3 minutes of messing with the calibrator on 2.2, probably about 3 times out of 4. I saw no correlation in what worked and what didn't. Hoping its just a bug that has to get worked out for official 2.2 release.

Its probably a sick joke...!.. Think about it... picture all of us idiots sitting on the couch, twirling this phone around pausing every now and again to see if the phone is green... We look like a bunch of mental patients...

Even better, the phone's video camera probably clandestinely activates during the calibration sequence, records us all looking like idiots, and then secretly uploads the video to Google's offices where they can all have nice laughs at our expenses. Pretty soon, they'll being posting montages on YouTube.

As for the actual calibration, it took me twice to get it done. The funny thing, though, is that the second time I had given up... and then the screen turned green and said it was complete. Bizarre.

If anyone knows the secret to calibrating this f@#%$ compass in OTA 2.2, I'd like to know it. I calibrated it in 2.1, now all it will do is turn red, instead of green. I am doing exactly like the animation shows, and it's not working, and I'm rotating the compass image, not the phone image. I know that's a common mistake.

I've tried indoors, outdoors, GPS on, GPS off, wearing pants, in my underwear...it just won't work.

ETA: I finally got mine to calibrate by shutting down the phone, and powering back up. Only took about a minute after that!

I'm sorry, but this thread made my laugh by imagining people twisting and twirling their phones for 5 minutes! :)

Thank god for this thread. I would have been twirling my stupid phone around forever trying to get the phone image to turn green. I thought that I'd have to be some sort of contortionist in order to get that to happen.

Ya. Best to calibrate outside, away from buildings and anything electronic/magnetic.

Have you checked out the free app "Compass" from the Market? It's VERY cool! The one I downloaded is by Catch.com. It uses your now-calibrated GPS compass and on screen looks just like a hand-held compass. You have options to change face and background.

I did have that app on 2.1 but haven't re-downloaded it on 2.2 due to the fact that I cannot calibrate the compass.

Try again. Takes several minutes, but when it "turns green" you get a notification on the screen that it's calibrated. You don't have to be turning it rapidly for it to work, just rotate the way you turn it each time.

PS - for the Compass app, you will have to wave it in a figure 8 several times. Non-X owners are beginning to wonder about us.....

I had trouble outside getting the red compass and then I tried it here by the computer and it calibrated after about a minute.

But its way off - 40 degrees from a standard magnetic compass - I should have 10 degrees off per the wiki article above.
