Reading through several threads on the Gear Fit2, I've seen it mentioned that calorie estimates for some workouts (not using the outdoor GPS tracking) may not be affected by the heart rate. I find that confusing. How else would this, or any device, estimate the calories burned by an indoor workout?

The S Health estimates calories burned by use of your profile.
Age, gender, height and weight.

Pretty much, yeah. Fitness trackers of any type use extremely complex algorithms to calculate the information we see, but in the end, it's always an estimate.
The base data is your age, gender, height, weight.
It then uses your heart rate and other data collected from your Gear to give you a final result.
But, its still an estimate.
