Came across someone selling their HTC One with a broken screen... for $100. Worth it?

Is this an easy fix on this phone? With its build quality and the whole '4 hours to make just one unit' thing, I feel like it could be an issue.. but wanted to confirm with anyone who would know better than me.

If it's an easy fix, then $100 for the phone plus maybe another $50-$75 to fix would be a pretty good deal right? Or is replacing a screen a big no-no in regards to just never being the same phone again

Considering you can get a brand new one for $100 from the phone company I'd say go that route.

Easy fix? Not even

If you can verify that only the screen is broken, see what htc will charge to replace it, add that cost to the $100 for the phone and you'll see if you're "saving" any money

So much for that build quality.

You do realize that a broken screen isn't a build quality issue, right? It's a user caused issue, otherwise known as neglect. Unless the screen spontaneously cracked from some force being applied to the screen from the build quality, ie, a stress fracture. Which I highly doubt as most fissures are formed from a force of impact. If it was a build quality issue, the owner could have sent it in for warranty replacement, therefore negating the need to sell it.

OP, if you buy it and send it back to HTC for repair, you are looking at about a $200 repair, making the price of the phone $300. Still not bad.

100 bucks for the device with a broken screen and an unknown general condition and history, plus 180 dollars (or more, depending on the location) to replace the screen, that's a total of $280+ for a device that will be considered 'open' and will definitely decrease in resale value because of that, so I'd say buy it from your network provider with a contract or a used one in a good condition from craigslist, ebay, etc..

These phone screens crack more easily than any phone I have ever had. I went with another HTC after a great experience with an HTC Inspire. My first One cracked spontaneously in my hand after two weeks...ATT replaced it. The one I have now has a crack, and I have no idea when it happened :( Gorilla Glass my @$$.

I've had mine since U.S. launch and no issues. Subjective data is ...subjective.

How can glass spontaneously crack (without HUGE changes in temperature)? Are you super strong? That's two phones you've cracked without knowing how. Or do you mean scratch? Scratching seems easier than my old Galaxy S2. Crack - I think you need a pretty big impact.

As for the $100 phone with a cracked screen - why bother? This guy almost certainly isn't selling it for that price to be nice. He's trying to make back a bit of money on something he knows is too costly or time consuming or both to fix. He has almost certainly already looked into fixing it and ruled it out. It is not an easy fix. HTC have a method to fix it without destroying your nice shiny phone. I'm not sure I'd trust a third party to do a great job. Shop around for a better deal. My network in the UK (O2) sold me mine for ?360 brand new I'm sure you could find something similar. $100 for second hand very broken phone is not great. Save yourself the stress.
