Camera cheat sheet

Greetings everyone I searched on the internet and haven't found anything too detailed or specific enough to really explain the cool features of the pro mode of the camera - does anyone have any good references on what all the different options on the pro mode mean so we can mess with it and improve and take advantage of the capabilities of the camera thanks. I keep sliding the different options one way or the other to try to see what they do and what effect they have but it is frustrating because I can't seem to find or figure out exactly what they all do to really take advantage of it.

Without a basic understanding of photography in general you’ll have a bit of a hard time making sense of it all. I would suggest reading up on the basics of photography. You need to understand ISO, shutter speed, aperture, white balance, focal length, etc.

I figured and I appreciate that thanks but thought just maybe there'd be some Cliff Notes to help some novices like myself take advantage and learn?

Without a basic understanding of photography in general you’ll have a bit of a hard time making sense of it all. I would suggest reading up on the basics of photography. You need to understand ISO, shutter speed, aperture, white balance, focal length, etc.

This is more or less my interpretation of photography basics summed up to the important stuff. Might help or might not but here since no one in this thread has done anything of the sort yet:


ISO is basically the brightness of a camera you can adjust. Ramping up ISO can be a good thing specially if you're taking pictures in less than ideal lighting conditions but can result in showing more image grain.

Shutter speed is literally the speed a shutter stays open when taking an image. Faster shutter speed means you can capture fast moving subjects while slower shutter speed gives you motion blur. If you're really into long exposure photography, long and slow shutter speeds are your best friend but you'd be wise to use a tripod for that sort of thing.

Aperture is the length of the opening in a camera lens. A narrow aperture is good for shots that don't emphasize on a subject in the foreground but is bad for low light situations. A wide aperture is good for low light photography as more light is hitting the image sensor under the lens and is great if you're going for macro shots or just want a lot of bokeh but suffers from having soft details around the edges of the photo. Phones usually only have a fixed aperture to work with but the S9 and S9+ has two: F/1.5 and F/2.4 and it automatically switches between them in auto but you can change between the two in pro mode.

White balance is basically used to adjust color temperature to ensure colors in your photos are either color accurate or boosted towards the cool or warm side of the spectrum, whichever you prefer. You can leave this in auto if you don't care for color accuracy to a tee.

Focal length is the distance between the lens and image sensor. Basically how much of an image you can take with the lens you currently have. Smartphones only have fixed focal lengths and while phones like the S9+ have a telephoto lens allowing for x2 optical zoom, focal length is still going to remain fixed.




Anyways, best way to learn these things is merely just using the phone's camera in pro mode and messing around with the settings.

I would argue that simply playing around with the cam in pro mode is not the best way to learn these things. The OP needs to understand the close relationship between ISO, aperture and shutter speed.

Some mis-leading information already.
ISO (a outdated measurement and really needs to change) is the sensitivity of the sensor and it’s baked into the sensor and can not really be changed. By “increasing” the ISO in the settings you are not changing the sensitivity of the sensor to light at all.

Having two cams (like the S9+} does not provide 2x OPTICAL zoom. That’s a bunch of marketing crap. Zooming from 1x to 1.99999999x is digital zoom. When you hit the 2x mark the phone switches to the longer lensed camera. Anything above the “2x” is digital again. So there is not optical “zoom”as such at all.

Not trying to be a snob. I am a certified Canon School of photography student but i just use auto... Using manual uses too much time to learn from trial and error.

Yes, just telling him to learn for trying isn’t a good idea at all.
OP should spend a little time learning at least the basics of photography exposure.
