Camera is good but Is it just me or is the camera so slow on the G6?

I changed sd cards yesterday from a PNY Extreme to a Samsung Evo+ and what a difference. Below are my launch times. These are done with a stopwatch and my reaction when I see the camera screen preview. All modes except deep sleep were tested 5 times each, closing the camera app after each time. Deep sleep was tested once after letting the phone sit idle for 5 minutes. Im assuming thats enough time to engage deep sleep.

Samsung Evo+:
Volume down screen off deep sleep - 1.97 seconds
Volume down screen off right after screen turns off - 1.17 to 1.20 seconds
Launching from camera icon - .98 seconds to 1.02 seconds

PNY Extreme:
Volume down screen off deep sleep - 2.56 seconds
Volume down screen off right after screen turns off -1.62 to 1.68 seconds
Launching from camera icon - 1.32 to 1.41 seconds

Internal Memory:
Volume down screen off deep sleep - 1.87 seconds
Volume down screen off right after screen turns off - 1.15 to 1.18 seconds
Launching from camera icon - 1.03 to 1.06 seconds

If storing to an sd card, make sure you have the fastest card you can get or its going to delay both opening times and shutter times. The Samsung Evo+ seems to keep up with the internal memory speeds pretty well. I switched cards because the PNY was causing some pictures to be fragmented and corrupt.

The other day I was getting between 2.11 and 2.15 coming out of deep sleep with internal memory. Not sure why today was faster.

Actually, this may be of help to some users. I too was disappointed by how long it took to load the camera app from standby. Turns out, it's because the OS was aggressively conserving battery.

It's a great feature, but if you use your camera frequently, you'd benefit from going into settings and making sure the OS isn't optimizing the camera app for battery use. Tried it about two hours ago and now the camera loads up a lot faster than it used to. Same logic applied to my Google Music app (IMHO that app is just **** but that's a conversation for another thread :) )

It might be helpful to others to post the actual steps to the settings if you don't mind.

I couldn't point to one, but I've seen several reviews mention that the camera can be slow to launch. The main to I remember was that shutting off the preview strip could speed it up a bit.

Also, in regards to photo quality, remember that you're not getting the highest quality pic if you're taking a full screen picture. I hunk full screen is only about nine megapixels. I think 4x3 is the seeing that actually gives you all 13 megapixels, and that can make a difference with picture quality

I don't have a G6 but on my V20 no difference between internal and external

Hmm i just returned from checking out the Lg G6 and i am really shocked how slow the Camera is. I think the camera and specially the shutter speed is awful, 2 seconds between shots??! I can’t even explain how awful and slow it is. I compared it with my almost 3 year old Sony Z3 compact and the Sony was even a little bit faster. You can take a Iphone 5 and its faster, yeah maybe the quality is bad but at least you got your picture. If you want to snap a pic of your kid or try to snap a pic of a playing cat............. no way. I reviewed a lot picture quality comparisons, with flowers and nice houses but honestly i dont care about this. I want a fast camera. I watched a lot of reviews and was going to get me a LG G6 but nope dealbreaker. If i want a slow phone i get out my Samsung S2. And regarding the rest, i really dont care much about chipsets and memory and Screen size, this are nice add-ons but worthless if i have to use a slower camera then on my sony. But please consider this is my usecase and my opinion, i am sure it is an amazing phone (the screen is great) if you have the appropriate use case for it. Its just not the phone for me. I feel kind of disappointed that we still have bad and slow cameras in 2017.
I think I get me an old S7 because when I tried it (layed next to the LG) it was way faster in snapping pics and the price is almost the same. Oh boy LG please improve this with the next phone, such a good phone but terrible camera performance.

Did you check it out in a store by chance? I've been putting the camera and app through the ringer lately and it's not slow by any means. Was it stuck in Manual mode or exposure locked? There must have been something there... There are some things that can slow down the launch of the app, like having the in-screen camera roll enabled with a ton of pics stored locally... but as far as the business of taking pictures, it's pretty zippy.

I wouldn't make any judgements based on the one you used.

Same deal. Love the quality of shots when I can get them, but I'm of the 'snap a ton of pictures of my kids and get a good one hopefully' and this camera makes it a little hard.

Re: Camera is good but...

Take HDR off and it'll be quicker. You don't 'need' HDR on this phone like you do with the Pixel.

I was having the same delay issue, and while photographing a moving target it caused me to miss many shots. I turned off the HDR and the speed is MUCH better! I'll have to try it out more and see if how the pictures look without it, but it definitely sped up the shutter press lag.
