My main camera settings is set to take 16M pictures, but over half my pictures from vacation are only 6M quality. What is causing my camera to change the mega pixel setting from 16 to 6? I cannot reproduce the behavior. The phone is just doing it randomly it seems. It's very frustrating.

phone: sm-g925v
android: 7

Are you using the stock camera app?

Are these photos saved to your device, or are they uploaded to the cloud (Samsung Cloud or Google Photos)? If they're uploaded to the cloud, are you saving them in full resolution?

I'm using the stock camera app. The pictures are saved directly to the phone, no cloud service used.

Are any of those burst photos? Or using some special filter or mode?

No filters. I took one burst (30 pictures at once thing). I just did a burst photo and it did all 30 at 16M quality. No matter what i try i cannot reproduce the issue, yet over half of my vacation pictures are at 6M quality. It makes no sense.

In the gallery app, select one of those photos and look at the Details/Info. Anything unusual about them compared to the 16 MP photos? Are any special modes listed there, or are the filenames in a slightly different format?

Here are the details of a 6M and a 16M image from Gallery and QuickPic. Nothing sticks out as to what caused the decrease in image quality/resolution.

Were the good and bad pics mixed, or were they good for a while then all bad after a certain time?

I'd recommend you to uninstall QuickPic and any other CM app as soon as possible. After that you could try force stop and clearing data for the camera app just in case there's some hidden setting we all are missing. Restart the phone and see if the problem comes back.

You definitely on the right track

Good call. I didn't notice the mention of QuickPic at first. OP, in case you're wondering, QuickPic used to be a great alternative gallery app for Android, but then the weasels from Cheetah Mobile (who are infamous for shady behavior like sneaking adware and unwanted ad-filled "features" onto your phone, as well as questionable handling of your data) bought it and proceeded to tarnish it with their usual shenanigans. Hard to say if what you're seeing is due to something related to the app, but best to get rid of it. If you're looking for a good 3rd party gallery app that isn't tainted, then try Focus or Piktures. Personally, I only use Google Photos and am very happy with it.

The first 5 days of pictures are all 6M. Day 6 is a mix of 6 and 16. the last two days are all 16M.

I'll uninstall quickpic as recommended. What's recommened, Google Photos or Gallery?
