Is the metal ring around the camera lens slightly raised?

Yes but a mod will eliminate the bump around the camera.

I tried the nylon style shell but it was too slippery and didn't sit entirely flush and annoyed me. The battery mod is too heavy and expensive. And I don't really need it. I have chargers all over the place and the battery on this is awesome. I thought about getting the OG style shell but I am worried it'll have a gap and I'll just end up taking it off. I like the look of the phone naked

the Moto style shells fit fine. no gap. just for the light wood one on Amazon. I have the dark wood and both nylon ones. fit just fine
