Camera question

So the Note 20 Ultra has a lot of camera options, when you hit the 5x zoom is it actually using the optical lens at that point or using the main lens? I have heard conflicting reports as to why some people are not getting clear zoom pictures, some say to zoom in to around 10x - 20x then pull it back to 5x so that it is using the correct zoom lens.
