Camera stopped working two days ago.

Couple of days ago camera wouldn’t focus. Yesterday, double press power button, camera would start then close. Hit the camera icon on home screen, it would start and close. Occasionally, the app will open, but will not focus. I have cleared cache on app, uninstalled updates, started in safe mode, and then finally factory reset. Nothing worked. Still doesn’t work. I thought maybe had something to do with June update, but now I’m not sure. Anyone else having issues.

I see you are a newer user here - welcome to Android Central!

I have had my Pixel 2 for about 15 months now and have not had this happen to my camera app - hopefully other Pixel 2 users will chime in soon with their experiences.

I was going to suggest booting your phone into Safe Mode to see if perhaps a particular app (a camera filter app, etc) could be causing this issue; but you stated that you did a factory reset and the same thing still occurred, even when you started it on Safe Mode. Did it occur before you re-installed all of your apps?

I worked with google support. Did safe mode. Didn’t help. Right after FDR camera still didn’t work.

It sure sounds like a problem with the camera module. The phone should still be under warranty, so contact Google.

Being sent to a company in Grapevine, TX, so I’m assuming it’s going to be repaired, not replaced.

Replacement phone arrived Friday. Got it activated and set up. Everything good so far..

Give it time lol....they just factory reset somebody else's problem phone and sent it to you, and did the same with your phone. They basically just keep juggling phones around until folks either finally get a good one, or give up on getting a working replacement.

They only truly retire bad phones after they've been returned multiple times. From a business standpoint it's actually the most cost-effective way to do it, that's why pretty much all companies follow that business model. It doesn't mean it's good for customers though :-[

But since when has a company put customers first LoL.

Same problem. Pixel 2 XL, camera stopped working yesterday. If I restart, it works for a minute or to and then crashes whenever to start it. Tried Manual Camera. Same issue. Android 9 with August patch.

Have you booted your Pixel 2 XL into Safe Mode to see if the problem persists there?

Short version, I ordered a new camera in December. It was stuck on backorder (probably because of China's COVID-19 outbreak). I just got it installed today. Everything is good.

Previously tried a factory reset which wasn't helpful. I noticed that the camera was making noise almost constantly. Upon inspection, I could see the lens move up, stop, and drop to the bottom of the aperture (hence the funny noise).

Did you have to break the glass screen to take it apart? My December 2017 Pixel 2 camera stopped working yesterday. I too, can hear something rattling inside. Am debating a new phone or trying to fix. Thanks.

With the Pixel 2 series receiving Android 11 then losing monthly patch support this Fall, it might be more prudent to look for a replacement device than to spend money and effort repairing the one you have.

Ended up with an LG g8 Thinq unlocked. It is a nice phone but since I'm on Verizon, buying an unlocked phone I ended up losing Visual Voicemail and WIFI calling. Oh well that is what happens when your phone breaks and you are in a hurry. The LG isn't a bad phone but I will miss the monthly security updates that came with a Pixel device.

Glad you found a solution. I took my Pixel to a repair shop. New camera was $110. I like the handset so it was an easy decision.
