can 3g phone be used for internet on 5g hotspot?

Lets see if i can ask my question correctly.

My wife has a 3g phone she likes that she uses for internet only ( no sim ) that she connects to internet from a working phone or local hotspot.

She asked me if this 3g phone can always be used for interent only ( connected to a hotspot) even after everything is 5g.

I would think so but im not sure,

I don't see why not. As far as the phone is concerned, it's just connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot, and doesn't care how the net gets to what it thinks is simply a router.

Which phone does she have? If it's 3G only, it is presumably quite old with a very outdated Android version. As time goes on, she will likely find more and more compatibility issues with apps and services.
