wanted to know if there is a simple way to see if its unlocked or how much it will cost

Is your phone GSM? I believe Verizon is CDMA. You should definitely go to a Verizon store and confirm before you buy, port and try to switch.

Most new phones support both but you need to talk to AT&T about unlocking, and definitely confirm the phone you have will work before trying to switch.
