Can a phone's resolution be lowered?

I'm interested in the G3, but I hear people complaining that the power to drive the 2k screen is a drain on battery life and overall performance. I'm wondering if it's conceivably possible for some crafty devs to put together a ROM/kernel combo that could effectively run the phone at 1080p.

When my PC can't handle a game I lower the resolution to boost performance. I'm just wondering if there's any restrictions in the hardware or in the Android system itself that would prevent such an adjustment in system wide resolution output. Has it just never been something people have wanted to try or is it just MADNESS!?

Very nifty. Too bad (for me) that it requires root.

Interesting. I figured it would be possible and I do have root. Maybe I'll try it if I learn that there are more benefits. Personally, I'm happy with the battery life atm. We changed the LG G3's display resolution to 1080p - we got superb performance and negligible battery life increases
