Hello I have a Samsung galaxy s5 from t mobile and I'm on the 5.1.1 update and my battery life is horrible I was wondering if it was cause of the update or what

Back up all your stuff. Do a wipe cache partition in recovery mode. Do a factory reset.
Since a factory reset will bring your phone back to how it was when you first got it, you'll have to reinstall all your apps, reconfigure your settings, and retrieve your back ups. Sorry to say that this battery issue with LP has many times been remedied by doing the above steps.
Of course, you can just do the wipe cache partition in recovery and hope for the best. Wiping the cache partition will not/should not mess with anything on your phone, so no back up required. YMMV!

Can you attached a screen shot of the battery stats? Go into system settings > applications > battery. Hold volume down+power button to take the screen show and attach it to you a post. There's probably an app eating battery by preventing your phone from entering a "sleep".

I bought my s 5 a month ago and updated but hated it so eventually i downgraded. I'm currently on android 4.4.4 as i downgraded from lollipop. Compared to your galaxy s 5 devices how is my battery doing ?
