Hi guys, I'm new to tablets so apologise if these are dumb questions.....

My son recently got a samsung galaxy note and he loves it.
I've had a little play with it, so now I want one.
I was thinking of the Google Nexus because of size/power/price combination so I went & had a play with one in a store yesterday.
I noticed that it didn't have Polaris Office pre-installed unlike the Samsung, so I browsed for it (Polaris) on Google Play but couldn't find it.
However I could find it on samsung apps when I got home.

Here are my questions:
1. If I buy the nexus, get I download apps from samsung apps if I set up a user account?
2. Are there more apps on samsung play or google apps

Thanks

Tim

I believe you cannot..

google play deff has more apps than samsung.

try google docs if your looking for a documents app. it ties with your google account and works on any browser as well.

Polaris office app work differently. They are not published in the play store but they come pre-installed with some phones and tablets. That's the business model of that company that sells polaris office software.

Now if you setup your Nexus you can download it from Play store.
Playstore has 650,000 apps but Samsung store will have only few 100's of apps.

and for your office question. there is a wonderfull free app in play store for office. https://forums.androidcentral.com/e.../details?id=cn.wps.moffice_eng&token=NjS39TZb

Anyone try to backup a Samsung app on a Samsung device and try to sideload it on a non-Samsung device?

I can't speak to the question about the Samsung apps store, but as far as Office products, I have Polaris on my Asus Slider and it works reasonably well, I haven't done too much with it in the way of editing documents. I recently got Kingsoft Office from the Play Store, it was free. It seems to have a really nice interface and edits Word, Excel and PowerPoint. There is even a free version for Windows that you can find if you Google search for it. If you are most concerned with the Office/like apps there are several to choose from but many that provide edit capability are not free.

Also, check out 7Notes, the handwriting recognition is pretty good and I've seen posts on the reviews where people with the Samsung Note are buying it. For 99 cents it is worthwhile. I have it on my Nexus 7, Asus Slider and Droid 4, all for 99 cents.

OK, thanks for really great info.

One more thought.....
Would rooting nexus device allow me to run Polaris Office or a samsung app?
Its ok, I'm not on a mission to use polaris but I am keen to understand what stop the nexus from using samsung apps - because afterall, they are both android running 4.0 or later

I tried what you're asking when I had an LG Optimus 2X. The 2X came with it preinstalled but sideloading it back on when I put CM9 on the phone didn't work. The app installed ok but force closed when I tried to run it.

its always a hit or miss. if polaris included some code(DRM) to not make it run on other device then it wont work.
also some times it might break.

I am 50-50 on samsung app working on other devices.

I don't quite have an answer to the Polaris office question.. An alternative was suggested as well as a method of possibly getting Polaris to work, and rooting also would not likely be necessary, just so you know..

But I couldn't resist a chance to clear up a common misconception evidenced in the quoted part above: the Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy Note do NOT both run Android. The Nexus (any Nexus device) runs pure Android, straight from AOSP. The Samsung device runs Touchwiz.. Which is an OS which is Android-based but is not Android. Same with Blur on Motorola devices and Sense on HTC devices. These OS's are based on Android's open source code, but the code is often changed dramatically to create the OS they are actually running. And this is the main reason you will very often see apps which will not run on certain devices.. Because they are designed for a specific OS, usually pure Android but not always, and often times the OEM in question has made such extreme alterations to the Android base as to break the functionality of said apps.
Might be more than you asked for and not quite that clear right now, but I had to share because this is a big thing with Android :)
