Can I buy a generic USB cable for the Nexus?

I would like to have a charger in my office, would a standard USB to microUSB cable work? Then I could charge it from a USB port on my desktop

Yes you can use a standard USB cable, however charging it off your USB port of your desktop is likely to take a looonnnngggg time. The charger that comes with the Nexus 7 is a 2Amp charger, your USB port on a computer at most kicks out 1/4 th of that or 500 mah.

I sincerely hope so because otherwise I voided the warranty using a longer cable. :-\
