Need help connecting htc one m8 as mass storage.

I have a htc one m8 and before today I was always able to just connect my phone to my laptop (its windows 8) and the phone just appeared on the laptop as a storage device where I can easily go into the files and copy paste stuff. Just like a regular usb. However now what is happening is when I connect it , it doesn't show me the same usb mass storage.

Now it shows a blue HTC sync manager icon and when i press it. It starts to download it. However i dont want to use the sync manager cause it sucks! I wanna keep using it as a mass storage like a USB.

Any way to do this now? And why did it even happen :/

Welcome to Android Central! When the prompt to install HTC Sync Manager shows up, you should be able to cancel out of it. Then go to Windows Explorer and look for your HTC One M8 listed in the device list. You should be able to access it that way. Incidentally, I don't think the M8 actually can connect as USB Mass Storage, since this is a relatively outmoded USB connection protocol for Android phones. It should be MTP.

Thank you for the reply.

There is no way to cancel the prompt, the E-Drive changes to HTC sync manager and the 'One m8' folder that used to appear before doesn't appear anymore.

Before this problem i could always use my m8 as USB on my pc but now there is no way to go through my files while connected to the PC now. Like if i downloaded a pdf i could easily open the download folder in my PC and grab my file out of there.

When you connect via USB, do you see a USB connection notification in the notification bar? If so, swipe down the panel and tap the notification--can you choose MTP there?

Is it a work laptop or something? Some sort of device control software?
